Spot on tricks!

This morning we had the monthly spot on trauma which involves chasing 2 cats around the room, wrestling them into blanket wraps and applying it to their necks whilst they contort themselves into impossible positions. I am nursing several wounds on my arms, hands and back and I am thinking there must be an easier way? Please give me your hints and tricks!

Trying to do it when they are asleep is not an option, they can hear the click and smell it from the other end of the house. We’ve also tried the tablet versions - one cat is good as gold with tablets but the other goes back to her feral roots when we try it, and adding teeth to the claws during the wrestling process does not appeal! I also think they affected her neurologically because her pupils went strange the next day so I’m not going to risk it again.

It really shouldn’t take 2 people and result in this many injuries to deworm 2 cats surely!

I have this same issue with our newest cat, she is ex feral and literally goes feral when I'm trying to apply flea treatment spot on or work tablet 😫😫

Our older boy is great with both but little minx is a complete whirling dervish, evidence of injuries from last time.

Blankets won't work with her either, she just runs and hides under the / inside the sofa

Bravecto is spot on but only 3 months.
Program is 6 months and an injection.
Seresto is a 9 month collar but not suitable for outdoor cats as it's not a quick release collar.

Previous advice on here was to click it open from the next street, warm it up - and someone had some success putting it on from a teaspoon.

cultkid · 16/11/2021 12:15

I open it outside the room they hear the noise.
Feed them up high at waist height so when they come over to get their food the spot on needs to be under your wrist sleeve cuff. Little stroke on the neck and drop it on. My cat hisses and runs off. Do them seperately shut one out do it and then shut the other out do it.
Good luck it's crap I know

FlyingFlamingo · 16/11/2021 13:23

Thanks for these ideas!
I don’t like the idea of a collar so that’s out…I may try the spoon but I can imagine a well timed kick from the cat sending it flying!
Tell me more about the injectable one though - does a vet have to do it? Does it cover worms as well? We are using advocate and Droncit at the moment.

IntemperateSpirits · 16/11/2021 13:57

Yes a vet has to do it. It's called Program, doesn't cover worms though. Although as with all these things if you can throw money at the vet to jab them for fleas and stick a worming tab down at the same time, it gives you some time off from being attacked.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2021 15:25

The injection doesn’t kill fleas though, it just stops them breeding.

Not all spot Ons are created equally though, yours might hate advocate but be ok with bravecto.

You could ask the vet nurse to do it if you can box them.

FlyingFlamingo · 16/11/2021 17:46

There really isn’t an easy option is there?

The feral one will walk into a carrier but the other one has had regular trips to the vets (she’s on daily medication which luckily she takes like a dream) and she hates the carrier so taking her to the vets won’t work.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2021 17:53

You can buy cat muzzles & neat tea tree oil takes the sting right out of cat scratches.

That’s why you need the tea tree oil Wink

Iamanicepersonreally · 16/11/2021 21:53

I wait until my cat has her head in a bowl of food, then quickly squirt it on

Cecillie · 16/11/2021 22:14

Credelio tablets are great for fleas
Tiny , vanilla flavour
Lots of cats just eat them
Vast majority will eat happily in food
Simples !

Search "no cut" gloves or gauntlets on ebay. You can get elbow length chain metal gloves. With those and a welders helmet, you can cover most attack points.

Where do you get them please?
Cecillie · 17/11/2021 09:10

@PickupaPenguin8
They are prescription only so from your vets or ask vets for prescription and buy online

violetbunny · 17/11/2021 09:17

I shut mine in the bathroom before I even open the packet. Then sort of squish them to the ground from above so they don't wriggle or escape. Squirt on the back of the head and done!

Do you do spot ons if you have more than one dcat? Mine groom each other so I assumed I couldn’t use them.

FlyingFlamingo · 18/11/2021 20:00

I do, mine don’t lick each other very often and they hate the taste anyway

Snailhaterz2 · 23/11/2021 16:08

Its amazing how much they hate it. I pounced on big cat yesterday, when she was sharing a bed with little cat. Little cat has never been done before but took one look at big cat being zapped and hid under the bed. A day later, when I approached little cat, she hid under the bed again. I resorted to sitting with the tube in my pocket waiting for her to do one of her (many) visits to my desk, when she did, I whipped the tube out and zapped her. She made a noise that I've never heard before - it was a cross between being strangled and water going down a drain, but to be fair I'm unscathed!

Furries · 24/11/2021 02:51

I’d second the program injection! It’s twice a year, done by the vet, and is really quick.

One less thing to struggle with. And chucking a worming tablet down a throat is a peace of piss compared to trying to ensure that all spot on flea treatment gets onto their skin!

For tablets, best way I’ve found is to firstly have the tablet out the packet and in an easily (for you) accessible place - a fair while before you’re due to give it!

When it comes to “dinner time”, go through the usual palaver of dishing it up. This normally gets them in the room you want them in. Then quickly scoop them up, plop them on the worktop so that they are facing away from you and kind of leaning backwards into your chest. Gently squeeze sides of jaw, pop tablet in and very gently hold mouth closed - they will swallow! Immediately offer them Dreamies. Then put bowl of dinner down for them. Three months later, they’ll have completely forgotten that this routine is coming round again 🤣
