Cat loose poos are doing my head in!

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 21:59

Can anyone help please before I loose my mind.
Have 2 cats, one is 1, one is 12 weeks.
Had cat 1 on Harringtons biscuits and Felix As good as it looks. Kitten has diarrhea.
Change to James Wellbeloved dry and wet. Cat 1 has diarrhea.
Both wormed a week ago.
Thought maybe I'm doing something wrong by buying the expensive quality food as cat 1 is literally pooing through the eye of a needle.
I stuck them on GoCat dry and whiskas wet. Kitten soft poo, cat 1 diarrhea. So expensive food and cheap food, same outcome. She has been like it for a week.
Vet visit for prokolin paste, done nothing. Brought some johnsons diarrhea tablets for cats. Done nothing.
I have 2 cats indoors with 2 kids (not normally a problem, no bad poos in a year) and now I have liquid poo everywhere. She has gone from pooing once a day to like 4/6 times. Kitten poo is still soft. They tread in it from the litter tray and walk it round my carpet. She farts all day long
I'm tearing my hair out. What can I try!

Can you put cat 1 back on the original food and just try the kitten with various others?

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2021 22:06

Try cereal free foods, see if that helps.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 10/11/2021 22:09

Harrington is grain free, James Wellbeloved and Felix aren't

What age food are you feeding the kittens?

ChickyNuggies · 10/11/2021 22:22

I also got a kitten recently, and have had similar issues although thankfully older cat hasn't had any issues.

I've had to switch kitten onto Royal Canin digestive which is the only thing that seems to firm things up, probably is, it costs a fortune.

I also have to feed them both separately, as they have different food now which is a pain.

It's also worth talking to your vet incase there are any parasites causing the issues. They can do poop samples.

What food was the kitten on when you get him from the breeder?

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 22:28

Cat 1 was on Harringtons biscuits and Felix and was fine, it was the kitten who had diarrhea. So I don't think it matters about grain?
I needed to change as I thought it was the biscuits making the kitten have diarrhea and the biscuits are down all day.
Adult food as they nick each others food. Cat feed wet separately I suppose but not dry. I just don't know where to start its awful

Can* feet wet separately

Is the kitten from a cattery? Apparently there's a parasite that can pick up easily in group settings that causes loose, very smelly poos. I have new arrivals from a shelter who are doing knockout humdingers whose fumes can wake you up 2 floors away, and think I need to call the vet - possibly the same for you!

Terminallysleepdeprived · 10/11/2021 22:42

You need to stop the kitten eating the adult food. It's digestive system is not strong enough for it.

there is a reason they sell kitten food

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 22:53

Tbh I thought kitten food was a gimmick, just from what iv read on forums etc

If I put kitten biscuits down the big cat will eat them. It's not the kitten with diarrhea now its the bigger one

Felix as good as it gets gave one of my cats diarrhoea too. (His sibling was ok though).

We switched to Wainwright’s wet food which is working better for him (but not fit my wallet).

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 23:03

Does anyone here have an adult cat and a kitten and leave biscuits down all day? What do you feed? I can't think what else to try. Wormed, vets, prokolin, diarrhea tablets.

Food might be a red herring, they might be passing a bug back and forth (and to you).

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 23:23

They are indoor cats. What sort of bug are we thinking x

Kitten has just been to the toilet now and is normal. She has been 3 times today though and 2 were soft

I had a similar experience last year with my kitten. I stopped giving cat/kitten food and gave him plain boiled chicken and scrambled eggs for a week or so which vastly improved things as I think it gave his stomach a break. I then introduced Wainwright’s wet pouches and he’s been absolutely fine ever since! Dry food, paradoxically, seems to make his poo wetter so he doesn’t have any dry at all.

DuckPancake · 10/11/2021 23:43

Can't recommend raw food enough 👌🏻

xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 23:46

Duckpancake, where can I get raw. How do I feed it etc is it expensive

OP posts:
xxxJess123xxx · 10/11/2021 23:46

Redhead, I tried plain chicken and rice. Still loose x

Ooh Jess, I replied to your comment in a separate thread I've just realised! I feed my cats Purrform which I order online. You can get a trial set for £25 (5x 450g tubs). They include a guide for how to transition them onto raw food too. The food itself doesn't smell, and neither does their poop. It's fabulous. Can be expensive but depends on your cats appetite! You can do subscriptions for every 1/2/3/4 weeks too. It all arrives frozen.

Findingmyway38 · 11/11/2021 00:01

They could have giardia - it's a parasite and it's hard to get rid of and can do this. I really recommend you test for this asap. Cheaper option than going via vet is ordering them each a test from wormcount online and sending that off. Your vet will prescribe a treatment on the back of the results if positive (results come very quickly). Also, cats have sensitive stomachs, switching food without slowly transitioning will cause stomach issues as well. You could feed something bland for a few days (boiled chicken for example) and then try something new to mix in. Surprised prokolin didn't work. It almost always does with ours, but it won't stop a bug / a parasite, just firm poos while they're on it. You can also get it cheaper on amazon than the vet, we always keep it to hand. Good luck! It'll eventually stabilise, but I know how painful this can be!!

Findingmyway38 · 11/11/2021 00:02

Website is wormcount.com btw

xxxJess123xxx · 11/11/2021 00:08

I was so surprised prokolin didn't work. They are just super soft.
Wormcount is a great idea thank you

You need separate microchip-activated feeders so you can feed them separate foods.

So give Cat 1 his normal food in his feeder and then the kitten can have whatever food agrees with him in his feeder.

I would feed wet food fresh in separate rooms and just leave dry food in the feeders for them to pick at during the day.

Findingmyway38 · 11/11/2021 08:45

This is exactly what we do
