Cat urinating on carpets

Our cat is about 12. He was a stray so we don’t know his true age but he’s been with us for 7 years.

He has sometimes urinated in the house in the past but he’s now doing it regularly. He has 2 litter trays which are kept spotlessly clean. He goes out often. I just can’t understand it. He picks the same two places. I use an enzyme spray but he’s absolutely ruined the carpet. I’m very paranoid about the smell. It’s really frustrating me but I can’t stop him doing it. We have an open plan house so we can’t really segregate areas off from him.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I wondered about the vets in case it’s a physical problem, however he’s always been a very aggressive cat and it is pretty much impossible to get him in a cat box! Of course I’ll take him if he’s unwell but I feel like it’s behavioural. Any help?

Forgot to say - he is neutered.

Sounds like a urine infection.

Our idiot kittens went for a corner in one room...

I washed, blotted & scrubbed with detergent and lemony smells .
I sprayed with teenager perfume (don't ask why I have a varied stash)
I put down lots of towels over the area.
More spray with teenager perfume

it has worked so far (!!)

I would put puppy pads down where he's been going.

And maybe try a different carrier, top loading metal cage ones (eg metalcote ones) can be much easier.

Puppy pads and towels! Great idea. Thanks all.

@lljkk is the lemony smell because they don’t like the scent of lemons?

@Fluffycloudland77

Sounds like a urine infection.

I would be having him checked for this first

My elderly cat started doing this when he had a UTI. Course of antibiotics sorted it right out. Get him down the vet. Even if not a UTI, could be a sign of something else.

From experience ~ If you have underlay the wee could have absorbed through the carpet and saturated it. It might be the reason why your cat goes back to the same area.
Agree with getting him checked for a UTI, when my cat done it that was what started it off.
I remember the paranoia about the odour and worried that my house was smelly. I used to clean thoroughly and use some bicarb of soda/lemon juice concoction.
Just a thought, could you place his litter box on top of the part where he is urinating?

My cats don't like citrus smells, yes. Good luck.

If he has access outside and he's only just started doing it, it could be because he's getting a bit older and doesn't want to go outside so much as it gets colder.

I would keep a really close eye on him, if he urinates more than you'd expect, then he does need a vet's appointment to rule out/treat a potential UTI/blockage or even stress.
