Introducing 4m kittens to rest of house...

Tips needed please!
We've have 2 adopted 4 month kittens and they've been here for 2 months, settled and doing well.
So far we've managed to keep them in the open lounge diner as plenty of space and their 'safe' under sofa spot when scared (less and less).
I was planning on trying to keep them here until after 5th November so they're in their known environment for firework noises, but after that I was going to open up the house 😊 and let them wander....

Any tips please or just set them free?!

I know I'll need to set up more litter trays, and will use some of their existing litter mixed with new for their scent.

I'm also worried about my carpets as the open area is a wooden floor....

You've done well to wait 2 months before giving them run of the house. Mine was so curious she would dart out the living room door, so she had run of the house after we'd had her for just a few days. She's 3 months now but has been running up and down the stairs easily enough for some time.

We only have one tray in the utility room. I didnt want to encouage her to do her business anywhere else in the house, and she finds the tray easily enough.

At night I keep her downstairs, so she only has run of the house n the daytime.

Well done we managed 2 days of keeping them in the kitchen. Then we did keep an eye on them and didn't leave them unaccompanied upstairs for a week or so.

We have 2 litter trays both downstairs - one in the kitchen and one in the hallway. (We did keep them in the kitchen overnight for much longer.)

Notaroadrunner · 31/10/2021 13:18

Our kitten had the run of the house from day 1 but he slept in one room. We had one litter tray in that room.

MurielSpriggs · 31/10/2021 13:23

I read it as four million kittens. It will never work.

Suzysuz · 31/10/2021 13:58

Thanks all, we've been lucky in that they've been fairly compliant in staying in 😆 but they do have a decent space and lots to play with so that might have helped... plus they were very timid when we got them as they hadn't really been handled or socialised as much so maybe they've been fine finding their feet in this space so far (the fosterer tried to handle them but the mum-cat went a bit crazy protective once they were born and she couldn't handle lots)

We're hoping to keep them back in the lounge/diner at nights 🤞🤞🤞

4 million kitties no chance! 🤣 I have enough with these two 😆

That's exactly what I do - lounge/diner at night.

I hope your kitties enjoy exploring the rest of the house 😃. They are so gorgeous.

AppleButter · 31/10/2021 18:24

To my delight I also read it as 4million kittens 😁

Beamur · 31/10/2021 18:27

Your carpets will be safe if they're used to using trays. Cats are clean animals.
They're lovely 💓

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/10/2021 19:08

Kittens that cute aren’t capable of naughtiness so you’ll be ok.

Worriesandwobbles · 31/10/2021 20:32

I started giving my kittens full run of the house (under supervision) but just for set periods of time, so an hour roaming, then an hour back in safe space, repeated a few times a day.

Ibizafun · 31/10/2021 20:44

I would let them discover one room at a time, or you may find they’re overwhelmed. When you let them out, leave the door open so they can always run back.

lljkk · 31/10/2021 20:49

crikey, my kittens were exploring other rooms within... 3 days? But yeah, bit by bit. We had to take caution because of grumpy resident cat (who is fine with them, now, I feel relieved to say that went well).

Ours are still a bit nervous i suppose, but getting more relaxed over time. Were yours just 2 months when you got them? When will they be neutered?

Suzysuz · 31/10/2021 20:54

They were 11 weeks when we got them - it all moved a bit quicker with CP and I thought I'd be on a list for a while but they were ready!
They'll defo be neutered, CP are amazing at what they give with their adopted cats ❤️ vet said they like to wait until 2kg, boy cat is close and likely ready in November perhaps.... girl cat is a bit lighter still so not sure if they'll still do at same time or wait until she's 2kg herself...

Also here for the 4 million kittens (and the devastation they leave behind).

lljkk · 31/10/2021 21:16

My girl kits came from CPL, vet (wrongly) said that they were both > 2kg at their 2nd jab appt (16wk old) so neutered last week. Actually, the little one was 1.975 kg on surgery morning but surgery went ahead. All good. I wonder if they healed super fast because of being so young (only 19wk now).

I thought my little one was wee so yours must be titchy small if also 17-19wks?

Suzysuz · 01/11/2021 08:21

They'll be 19 weeks tomorrow 😊 we do the vet plan so they go monthly, at the mid October appt he was 1.8kg and she was a little less so we thought he, or both, might break that 2kg line for their mid November appt, we'll see!
Are they small then? I have no comparison and these are my first cats.... they have food down and seem to eat little and often, I use a mix of wet and dry (we're still using what the Fosterer used for now), they play loads and have plenty of energy!

Yeah. I was fooled too. At least we got a photo. :)

SinoohXaenaHide · 01/11/2021 09:22

I am sad that it isn't 4 million kittens. That would be a good number of kittens.

We had ours shut into the open kitchen diner at night but they had access to the rest of the house after about a week, except we kept bedroom doors shut.

Just the one litter tray was fine.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/11/2021 10:17

Reminds me of this story

Worriesandwobbles · 01/11/2021 18:26

Mine are 22 weeks and both weigh 2.5kg. Just had both male and female neutered last week.

Mia184 · 01/11/2021 20:14

I read the same Grin

icedcoffees · 01/11/2021 21:53

Mine had the the run of downstairs from day one and we left her home alone all day from day three - honestly, they're cats, they'll be fine Smile
