Bringing our first cat home soon, kitten food recommendations?

He's 4 months, and is currently on supermarket kitten food. I want to change him to a better quality one and have read lots of recommendations of great quality foods but would like some ideas on which ones are slightly better value, but still decent quality.

This is my first post on the litter tray, but I do know the rules so have included the prerequisite photo!

I got a good price for Felix sachets on Zooplus. tbh, my 4m old's quite like the adult dry kibble (my adult cat gets). They are getting a blend plus one of them licks almost any bowl offered.

OMG charcoal tabby! I have one of them, sooo lovely.

I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to feeding, but I do know you should only change very slowly from one to another or they get stomach upsets.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 30/10/2021 18:57

Omg what a beautiful kitten!!!

As above be very careful on changing too quick, it can make them very poorly.

I would recommend something grain free.

Thank you, we think he is lovely! We've decided to call him Cobweb, since we're bringing him home on Halloween!

Yes will definitely make sure we go super slowly. Have already got a bag of his usual wet and dry stuff, and his regular litter.

Gorgeous kitty!
Mine liked Nature's menu. I think they were on Royal canin and whiskas when I got them. But they were/are quite fussy eaters so I did try a few others as well. I also fed them some freshly cooked meat or fish daily.

Have a look in Zooplus as they often have trial packs and you can try a few. My new boy is also 4 months and I transitioned him from Whiskzs to Feringa Kitten as much higher meat content and grain free... always worth considering for boy cats as grains can cause problems with their pee pipes (found out to my significant cost with my old boy!)

Hills kitten food is excellent.

It's really best to avoid food that contains grains or filler ingredients as cats should ideally eat a 100% protein diet and most commercial cat food is essentially like kitty McDonalds Confused

Unfortunately good food is pricier but I would suggest its worth it in the long run as you'll find your kitty has much less health problems.

Brands that i recommend and have used include Carny (often called meaty feast in the UK), Ziwi Peak, and Feline Natural (hard to find unfortunately)

Also ok though not as good are meowing heads pouches and blink pouches.

All those suggestions are wet food only as there really aren't any healthy options for dry food except Ziwi peak dehydrated (which most cats don't love on my experience).

I would recommend reading some more into cat nutrition (particularly as you will need to decide on health vs convenience when it comes to dry food) and seeing what works for you Smile

Yeah... I was told that, but my kittens had other ideas. I got confusing info about which adult food they were already on so bought wrong sort. We went straight from that to Felix Kitten... in meantime the kittens quite like the Purizon Dry that is only food my adult cat eats. One of the kittens may be missing tastebuds -- I've only seen her turn her nose up at bananas so far. Seems to make no difference what they eat, they are robust to all.

What an adorable kitten! He has Ideas and Opinions.

Duckypoohs · 30/10/2021 23:34

Watching too, my kitten is about 7 months now, she doesn't seem interested in any wet food, wil nibble at best. She is on Iams kitten food. Since I introduced that she barely looks at any meat or wet food. Not food orientated.

addler · 31/10/2021 00:10

Apparently this little cat is quite food oriented and tried to steal steak and butter chicken in the last week Confused

I would say that you could buy the best food on the market but if they don't like it, they won't eat it Wink

It's all very well people saying to buy X, Y and Z high quality foods but if your cat won't eat it, they won't eat it Grin

Mine are fed Harringtons biscuits and Felix wet food and are just fine. Expensive cat foods are great if your cat will eat them but don't get too stressed - cats have lived just fine for thousands of years without them Smile

He's home and after hiding for a couple of hours came out after DS had gone to bed and had something to eat, climbed and jumped over all the furniture and played with some toys and sniffed our toes Smile
