We are picking up our one year old rescue cat next week. This is all totally new to me so any tips about what I will need - Bowls, bed litter tray and toys are on my list - would be very helpful! Thanks!

Be guided by the car. Some will
Like to explore straight away. Some will hide. If they hide. Leave them too it and they'll come out in their own time. Stick to the food and litter the rescue use and change gradually if you want too.
Ps pictures are compulsory!

People will say not to bother with a bed but mine do use theirs.

I always set up everything in one room (lucky to have always had a spare room when new rescues have arrived) and they will 'tell' you when they're ready for the door to be open for them.

Mine have used a bed at the beginning, so it's worth providing one.

Furniture or cat tree arranged so can look out window.

Vertical (post) and flat (cardboard) scratchers.

Lots of treats.

Poo bags for removing soiled litter.

You've got it the wrong way round, the cat will own you.Smile

The rescue centre will advise on food.

Cats often refuse to use a bed.

Remove anything breakable from windowsills

Keep the cat indoors for a month, and when you let it out, let it out when hungry. You will be worried sick that it won't come back

Let it tell you that it needs cuddles

I find that a sundae spoon is best for scraping out the pouches. I think I got them in wilko

You will need a scratching post

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/10/2021 16:06

Tall scratch post and a flat card one because they use both.

You can recycle pouches at tescos and Sainsburys now.

You'll need a scratching post of some sort, and a cat tree so they can hide and jump up high on it. We have one that's both - it has a bed on top, a little basket, a house, four scratching posts and a dangly pom-pom thing they can bat about. There's always at least one cat on it at all times Grin

Make sure you stick with the food the rescue supply or recommend at first so you don't unsettle his stomach.

You may not see the cat for some weeks before it is brave enough to come out.
My current cat hid under the sofa for 2 weeks.

We adopted our 10yo 3 months ago.

The plan was to keep her in kitchen/utility to start with along with litter tray & food.

That lasted 2 hours. Grin As soon as we opened the door 'woosh she was gone' up to a bay window in our loft conversion where she hid, coming down for food / litter only.

After a few days she moved into the cat box in the living room, she probably retreated there on and off for around a month. Now it is the comfy chairs all the way! Currently basking in the sunshine at my feet.
