Acting strange

My cat has for the last 2 days been lying in the one spot behind an exercise bike which sits against a pouffe. It's an awkward place to be lying but it means she's tucked away so perhaps feels secure. She never lies in there she's usually on top of the pouffe, middle of the floor or in one of the beds. She's always usually very laid back and never hisses or claws, she has always happily allowed my 4 year old to pick her up and everyone comments how lucky I am that she's never hurt her trying to escape from her clutches! The last 2 days though she's just lay in this is unusual spot and hissed at my older daughter last night when she tried to pet her. My partner has just bent down to her and she also hissed at him and her claws were out. Does this sound like the behavior of an unwell cat? She's 3 in a couple of weeks time so still young I'm a bit worried about her Sad.

Urgent vet appointment

YetAnotherSpartacus · 29/10/2021 12:15

yep.

Sparklingbrook · 29/10/2021 12:20

I would say something is hurting maybe?

BlackCatTabbyCat · 29/10/2021 12:23

Oh this isn't the answers I was hoping for I really thought I was over thinking Sad. If it makes an difference I should add she's not lying in that one place constantly she is still active and eating and walking around the rest of the house but seems to settle there. I've just gone out my room and she was sitting at the top of the stairs which she does often then she followed me downstairs and climbed on me to be petted which is normal for her. She also allowed me to lift her up which I was about worried about in case she was in pain. I guess a trip to the vet is in order I'll give them a ring.

Sorry my first post has made it sound like she is just lying in that spot all the time I didn't mean it to sound that way. It's a new hiding spot though and she keeps going back to it so it's definitely unusual.

Cats are creatures of habits. Anything out of character needs checking. Aggression in a cat that's normally docile is definitely a red flag.

Beamur · 29/10/2021 12:27

Just a thought about the new spot - any chance that there's a hot water pipe underneath?

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/10/2021 12:29

You should ring at the first sign of illness, two days is too long.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/10/2021 12:32

Yes. Definitely vets ASAP.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/10/2021 12:33

My late cat took to sleeping in odd places, it was the first sign that her kidneys were failing.

daisypond · 29/10/2021 12:35

I think she could be ill. It doesn’t mean she’s in pain though.

It's only just now it's occurred to be that something may be wrong I haven't deliberately left her for 2 days. She seems well in herself I thought it was strange that she was lying in a new place but didn't really think anything of it until my partner came up to tell me she had hissed at him that's when I realised she might be acting strange for a reason . Also its probably more like less than 24 hours as she started lying there yesterday late afternoon. Shes had no signs of illness and now I've realised that perhaps she may be unwell I'm trying to get through to the vet just now.

@Beamur no there's no hot water pipes where she's lying. There was a couple of bits of clothing that had fallen off the pouffe so when she was lying there yesterday I thought perhaps the clothes were cosy for her.

Oh sorry to hear that Sad. I'm hoping it's nothing serious but will feel better once she's been checked over.

Could she be pregnant?

BlackCatTabbyCat · 29/10/2021 12:52

@picketingpanic

Could she be pregnant?
No she's spayed.

I've spoke to vet on the phone and they didn't seem concerned. She went through some questions such as is she eating, drinking, going to the toilet, being handled. All of which we're yes. She says there's nothing there of immediate concern especially when mentioned her climbing and playing and lying on her back to be tickled she says everything sounded positive 😕. She advised me to keep a close eye and keep a diary if there's anymore unusual behaviour and try and get some videos. I'd be reassured by this if I'd phoned before posting on here but the replies I've had are making me doubt myself.

Oh and also should have wrote in my original post (sorry!!) that although she's normally very chilled there is occasions where she will hiss at my partner (think she senses he's not a cat lover!) but it's unlike her to hiss at the children.

BlackCatTabbyCat · 29/10/2021 12:59

Normally if he told me she hissed at him I wouldn't think anything of it but after hissing at my daughter last night and lying in a strange place it just made me worry Sad
