Water fountains

Just got a kitten this week, and I'm wondering what others do about getting their cat to drink water? She doesn't seem interested in the bowl, but I've seen these fountain type things, and wondering if people rate them?

Only 1 of mine drinks out the bowl. The other drinks out the pond! Do they eat wet food?

cricketmum84 · 29/10/2021 08:07

Both of mine love their water fountain. It was well worth the money. We have the catit.

bellissimiaow · 29/10/2021 08:08

We've got 4 cats and they drink noticeably more water from the fountain than they do from a bowl. They like the movement of the water I think.

We've got this one.

I have had cats for years, both indoor and outdoor and have rarely seen them drink water. I’ve tried the water fountain and that didn’t make any difference either.

dustofneptune · 29/10/2021 08:12

One of my cats will only drink from a pint glass haha

The other one will drink from anything

Both of them used to like drinking from a running tap, but we discouraged that because they kept pestering us to run the tap ;)

Go for it! See if your kitten likes it :) If she doesn’t, you can always sell it on eBay.

I tell a lie.

It's the cat mate that we have not the catit

Your link doesn't go to a cat fountain
Mumdiva99 · 29/10/2021 09:27

Our cats drink more from the bowl in the hallway than than the kitchen.....the drink most from the manky water outside in pots....although we try to keep one bucket clean.
They drink from the tap by licking it until.it drops some water out.....
They will drink out the water feature in the garden if it's switched on (that's yucky recirculated water....)
Leave a bowl of water in an odd place.....they will drink.

We have a surefeed fountain which I love and my cats drink more water now. I think it's really well designed.

NuzzleandScratch · 29/10/2021 11:04

Thanks so much everyone! Sounds like they're worth a go. I haven't had a cat since I was a child, but I recall they're prone to kidney problems, so I know this is important.

My three love their fountain

Toddlerteaplease · 29/10/2021 12:20

Mine love their fountain. They also like human beakers/glasses.

FluffEverywhere · 29/10/2021 12:28

Our boy drinks either from the dog bowl, bird bath, or pond, never from his own bowl. Tried a fountain, he just ignored it..

MistandMud · 29/10/2021 13:30

Keep the lid down on your loo. One of ours was obsessed with drinking from that!

NuzzleandScratch · 29/10/2021 14:49

Yes she currently has wet food, so I guess that helps with fluid intake. Thanks for the tip on the toilets, wouldn't have thought to close the lids! Think we'll order a fountain then and see how we go, thanks!

Mine drinks out the neighbours water feature. Or from puddles Confused

TheQueef · 29/10/2021 14:54

Remember, don't put it next to the food. Even if you just have a water bowl, the furry gods don't like the food and drink beside each other Hmm

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 29/10/2021 15:00

Think carefully about the type of fountain and where you put it...

We went through a few before settling in a catit one that is a bowl with a pump that circulates the water over a plastic top, so all the water is effectively in a large sump. 3litres so too heavy for the dat to lift and not easy to splash out with a paw.

I had a catmate one that was a cascade from top to a bowl but my dcat would lift the bottom bowl with her claws and empty it onto the floor... Not great when it's on a wooden floor 😂

Before that I tried a gravity feed water bottle but very similar and the cats used to paddle and splash in it getting water everywhere too ....

Some very expensive lessons as we had to relay the dining room floor!

Also - don't put food/ water too close together or near litter trays - some cats don't like it.

NuzzleandScratch · 29/10/2021 16:15

Funny you say that @TheQueef as I moved her water bowl away from the food earlier and she drank from it for the first time! Oh gosh @putthehamsterbackinitscage, sounds like a mine field! The other consideration is we have an 18 month old lab who is likely to think this whole thing is very exciting!

Mine have a fountain (across the hall from their food as they also don’t like water next to food HmmConfused ) and we also leave the odd bowl around the house (upstairs in the bathroom and in the kitchen) in case the fountain stops working (when the filter needs replacing or the water level runs low it stops flowing).

One of mine used to eat wet food and never drank, the other ate dry food and drank A LOT! Since getting the fountain they both use it and now they’re both on dry food so I also use a cystitis medicine (and sprinkle on pro-biotic) in their food to make sure they don’t get UTIs. Both seem much happier and the litter tray is much less gross now they’re both on dry food!

RaisedByPangolins · 29/10/2021 16:20

But like others, their favourite water source is our glasses on side tables and desks!

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 16:21

I can hear mine outside now and the neighbour "do you want your water feature on Ollie? You can have a nice drink then. Or I can leave it switched off? Don't get your paws wet"
HmmHmmHmm

NuzzleandScratch · 29/10/2021 16:47

Love it @NotMyCat ! Grin
