Did you change your rescue cat's name?

Just wondering what everyone's stories are - we just kept the name the rescue gave our cat.

I've never had to name a child and don't know you cope with that responsibility so just seemed easier all round!

So I now have a cat apparently named after (psychopath kid) Bobby Beale from EastEnders (which I don't even watch).

Yes.

I gave my children the option of naming them but they were just looking round saying ‘Sofa’ ‘Carpet’.

Anyway I since found out why their foster carer picked their names and they’re lovely.

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 29/10/2021 07:23

I meant yes I kept their original names!

nettytree · 29/10/2021 07:38

We renamed one cat as we already had a cat by thst name.

Onthegrid · 29/10/2021 09:59

First rescue cat was a stray and named by the foster, we liked the name and didn’t even think about changing it.
Next one was a rehome and her name suited her so again kept it
Latest 2 were kittens with boring names picked by the shelter so we named them.
I am not sure cats are bothered by what their names are as long as you pamper to their every need!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/10/2021 10:33

Our current 4 cats all had Battersea names. We only renamed one. Sybil (who came to us with the cloyingly saccharine name of Bluebell.)
We did plan to rename Karl and Lenny but didn't get round to it...

Hippopotas · 29/10/2021 10:39

Yes because she was a kitten and I hated the name

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/10/2021 10:46

No but she’s 10/11 and I didn’t want to confuse her. We’ve added Bear as a second name and mostly call her Puddy-Bear now.

SunshineCake1 · 29/10/2021 10:49

@Livebythecoast

Yes, we did because she had our daughters name and it would get confusing!
One of ours has the same name as my son but shortened. We were adopting two cats but had three kids so didn't think it was fair for one child to not rename. Out of the four Guinea pigs we have rehomed we have renamed all of them I think.
Petrarkanian · 29/10/2021 10:51

Yes, all of them. They don't care.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 29/10/2021 10:54

Completely changed our rescue cat's name. He was still very young and was brought in as part of a stray litter.

tinkerbellvspredator · 29/10/2021 10:57

Yes we changed ours, her name was Girly Confused

Cantthinkofaname21 · 29/10/2021 11:01

We changed it but to something similar sounding.. one of them had a daft name so we wouldn’t have kept/used it,

SagelyNodding · 29/10/2021 11:02

Out of 4 'rescues', 1 came nameless Sad so we obviously named him. One had her name adapted, still finishing with the same sound, just less cutesy and it didn't phase her at all.
We kept number 3's name as it really suited him. Unfortunately he was hit by a car and died.
Number 4 was Robbie but DH wasn't a fan, so now he is Ralph Smile

oviraptor21 · 29/10/2021 11:03

She was called Fluffy. I gave her a proper name!

Corkit · 29/10/2021 11:15

I have a cat and 2 dogs and have kept all their original/rescue names. Would have preferred to rename as not really keen on any of them (the names not the dogs/cat) but it never seems fair to change them when they've just arrived in a new home, new names on top just seems too much. Reading that back I think it's fair to say I might overthink these things a little and attach human emotions to animals who most likely couldn't care less BlushGrin

Bimblybomeyelash · 29/10/2021 11:29

Yes. Our cat was a foundling and had only been in the shelter for less than a week. So the name they gave her wasn’t really hers anyway.

MissTrip82 · 29/10/2021 11:48

No, even though he had a name we consider bogan (chavvy in the UK).

We didn’t want him to feel like he wasn’t good enough…..

Snailhaterz2 · 29/10/2021 14:40

I adopted two adult sisters once - one black and one ginger - and the rescue place had quite clearly run out of imagination when it came to naming them, so they had to be changed. Farewell, Black Magic and Ginger Biscuit! I've also renamed rescue kittens, as I'm not 100% convinced that at 12 weeks old they've got the faintest idea what their names are anyway...

Vbree · 29/10/2021 15:11

No, she was 9 when we adopted her and it suits her anyway. I'd have thought it a bit like taking some of her of her identity if we changed her name.

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 29/10/2021 15:14

yes but he was a kitten & the foster carer said she never really used their names as people like to name them themselves

rainbowiris · 29/10/2021 15:16

We kept our rescue cat's name as it was also my grandma's name. It made me think she was destined to live with us Smile and helped to persuade DH she was 'our' cat at the rescue place (he was a bit reluctant, which is ironic given how much he loves her now and is completely her slave!).

TeeTotaller1 · 29/10/2021 15:18

Years ago we rescued a big fat tabby called Bam Bam....
We renamed him as there was no way I was going to be shouting 'BAM BAM' at the back door whilst shaking a bag of Dreamies

CornedBeef451 · 29/10/2021 17:53

I changed my cats' names when I adopted them. They were Coco and Chanel and I just couldn't call them that.

ArchwizardTVampirebat · 29/10/2021 18:31

Yes, every time. A session with Dreamies teaches the new name in no time - just say the name as you feed the Dreamie - job done.
