Weighed our cats today - I’m on big trouble when I take them to the vets next!

DCat1 - 6kg he’s a big chunky ginger boy he carries it well so doesn’t look that round though
DCat2 - 5.9kg she’s a little tortie and she looks well fat, she has little legs so just looks round and round bless her
DCat3 - 4.8kg and just perfect supermodel svelte
DCat4 - only a baby so 2kg

So I have then on Miaowing Heads Fat Cat Slim biscuits and they get 2 pouches between them all on the morning. The kitten is supposed to get kitten food but he prefers the diet food. I supervise breakfast then hide the kitten biscuits! DCat2 likes to eat on her own away from the boys and DCat3 likes to graze, DCat4 being a kitten is at the eat constantly stage as he’s growing.

How do I manage them all? I’ve been looking at those £80 feeders that are activated by their microchips, DH thinks I’ve finally lost it!

I have 1 small runty cat, one enormous tom, who is out a lot and is lean and muscular, and a very beautiful, indoor-only, pudding who seems to have an insatiable appetite. I had to resort to the individual chip- reading feeders to stop her ballooning still further. The feeder, plus a very controlled diet, including Fat Cat Slim dry food, has reduced her weight significantly. I can definitely recommend the feeders, and the outlay is preferable to having a cat who develops health issues.

MassiveHoard · 24/10/2021 23:21

Haha, mine are both over 7kg. I can't seem to get it down. You have my sympathies.

Monsterpumpkins · 24/10/2021 23:23

Dcat was getting porky. Got a dkitten and he has lost half a kg...

Catname · 24/10/2021 23:28

Microchip feeders were the only way to control my cats’ food intake. I’ve got a couple of grazers and a couple of gannets. It might work out cheaper than diet food in the long run, and sales are on the horizon.

NotMyCat · 24/10/2021 23:28

No advice. Mine just eats and eats and eats and the vet is "he could do with a touch more weight"
He's 3.4kg and despite doing nothing but sleep, has the metabolism of an athlete AngryGrin

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/10/2021 06:43

First thing and the most common mistake is are you weighing out the food and ensuring the ration is for the weight of cat you want them to be. If they are having half a pouch each a day you need to reduce the dry food ration by 25% to account fir this.
If the baby is less than a year old please stop if having the diet food as it won't contain the right balance for a growing cat.
Fat cats are at risk of diabetes, arthritis and complications from underlying heart disease so it is really important to keep them at a normal weight.

TroysMammy · 25/10/2021 07:19

Seeing the weights of your cats I'm actually a bit relieved. Haribo sat on the scales the other day and it showed just under 6kg. I've been reducing his dried food a bit but my DP has been treating him with fresh steamed tuna and I wish he wouldn't.

TroysMammy · 25/10/2021 07:21

Pity the vets have a vaccination problem because I really want my DP to stop with the treats.

Piggy42 · 25/10/2021 07:30

Mine is so fat, but he breaks into other houses and eats there!

mostlydrinkstea · 25/10/2021 07:41

I have 4 cats. Two are overweight, one is just right and I have a kitten. It is a phaff but they are fed in different places so that I can control what they eat.

The adults are on light biscuits. The kitten was on kitten biscuits but she is on normal ones as she is a year old now. The most overweight has her food weighed out according to the chart on the back of the bag. She was a chunky 5.5kg. In a year she lost half a kilo. She is looking much better. She probably has another half a kilo to go as she is part Bengal and a big cat.

Everyone but the chunkiest has a pouch of wet food in the morning and biscuits for lunch and tea. I have so many kittens with fostering that it is easiest to feed everyone small meals rather than put up with the werreting if the adults aren't fed at the same time as the fosters.

It is very slow but we are seeing results. What is odd is that three are sisters and have different metabolisms. One can eat what she likes. The other two just have to look at regular cat food and they pile it on.

sweetkitty · 25/10/2021 07:59

I think with cats it depends on their shape too we used to have a giant tabby boy he was 7.5kg but didn’t have an ox if fat on him he was just big. My other one was 5.5kg and obese as he had a little short body.

They get 3 Dreamies a day too kitten and slim-Jim get more Grin I’m going to have to invest in those microchip feeders aren’t in, the two fatties are only 3 so it’s an investment in their health isn’t it? Bloody cats Confused

No advice here!

Our female is 5yo and weighs about 3kg.
The kitten was one in May and he weighs 4.9kg.
The big rescue boy weighed nearly 8kg at the last weigh in Blush all the vet said was "that's a lot of cat!" Grin

They're all fed the same but the big rescue is lazy whereas the other two play a lot more. The female was the runt too.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 25/10/2021 09:00

My two were in for boosters a fortnight ago, girl cat is a slinky 4.1kg up 1kg from the year before. Boy cat is a solid 5.1kg also up a kg. I feed once a day (at 9pm) and I give one scoop each of whiskers dry food. They wont entertain me 're wet food.

They do get a few treats but as they go in and out, there is one particular house directly across the road from me who despite my asking them not to feed, they still do. My cats go straight across to get ham, cheese, chicken and other food from the fridge, girl cat meows at the window to tell them she is ready for food and when the front door opens she wanders in and sits waiting at the fridge. Boy cat is happy to eat the dry food they leave out for them and then they get a quantity of treats there on top of this. They would be unhappy being held inside.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2021 09:34

Magic was 4.8kg when she got pancreatitis. The vet said she was obese! She's not. She's got very short legs. That make her look fatter than she actually is.

veryouting2021 · 25/10/2021 10:00

Do they go out? I had two boys the same age. One was a perfect 4kg and the other was 7kg. I kept getting told off. They had one pouch in the morning and one in the evening and a measure of biscuits between them. I never saw the large one eating.

We moved house last year (and sadly svelte cat is no longer with us) and he's lost a couple of kg - Our old neighbours aren't feeding him anymore!
