Hello!

We are looking to buy a kitten and wondering where people tend to buy them from nowadays? I have googled and gumtree, pets4homes etc. comes up so just wondering if they're the places to go or not!

@Madwife123

£400 for a moggy!!

Where in the country is this? I’ve got Ragdoll kittens that are priced at £400 and not all found homes yet so I find it hard to believe anyone pays these prices!

I haven't seen a rag doll for £400! You're selling yourself short if they have all the right papers and genetic testing.

I tried the adoption route and got turned down because a bus drives past our rural village house every 30 minutes. We're well away from the main high street but apparently the bus made our house too dangerous. Ended up on Pets4Homes, checked out the breeder with kittens we liked on the GCCF website and now have a handsome, healthy and very affectionate 6 month old maine coon.

@MilduraS Not in my area. They are HCM tested, vaccinated, microchipped etc. but far too many people selling at 9 weeks with nothing for around £300 so people go for that option instead.

@Warmduscher

We adopted ours from Cats Protection - she was a stray who had had a litter of kittens on the flat roof of a shop before being rescued.
She is GORGEOUS!!

Yes go to a rescue, those fb "rescues" which rescue puppies and kittens from abroad, those "rescues" that have all possible choice of type....

This is just an example, but yes the prices are mad atm as I’ve been looking for one, there are cheaper ones but still more than they usually are £150 / £200!mark.

I got a kitten from the Scottish SPCA. I went in for a cat but because I had kids, none of the grown cats were suitable so we got a kitten. She's now a 5 year old.

Thank you - he's a lovely cat. He has a white stripe down his spine like a skunk too!

Warmduscher · 13/10/2021 20:35

She is GORGEOUS!!

True, but she’s a right bloody madam Grin

Our local rescues have LOADS of kittens at the moment. Often they don't advertise them as they can get them adopted easily. Register with rescues near you. Independent ones, cats protection, RSPCA etc.

Genuine question so please be kind!

We are looking for a kitten, I am constantly on the RSPCA websites, cat protection and local adoption places.
I have also looked on places like gumtree, not ideal but surely it would be better to get a kitten/cat from there to make sure it goes to a loving home? If they are kitten farms then I hate to think what might happen to them if no one bought them?

Buying kittens from kittens farms or backyard breeders just encourages them to breed more and more litters. If they can't sell the kittens they'll likely end up at a rescue when they are a few months older and no longer "cute" (in the eyes of the gumtree sellers).

Also, don't wait for the RSPCA / local rescue to advertise. They often have a waiting list for kittens (not necessarily a long one - it just means that many kittens have a home without ever being advertised!). Contact them now, get your home check done and you'll be ready to welcome your kitten(s).

Thank you both, I had in my mind that they would be killed rather then sent to rescueSad
I am off with covid this week so will make it my mission to ring around everywhere and get my name on the list.
