Is this common, or is my cat a nutcase?

We recently took on a rescue, and he has the most peculiar way of playing with toys. He will stand over it, manouevre himself into place so it is under his hind feet, and then stamp all over it before eventually falling over and giving it the usual mauling / bunny kicking.

What's with the weird back feet stamping thing? Has anyone else got a cat that does this while standing up?

Yes, normal play around here. My boy cats do it, I haven't seen girl cat play like that

TheQueef · 11/10/2021 16:52

My boy does this every time I wash the door mat.
He carefully treads it all down and then will roll himself up in it to kill it.

That’s normal.

StellaAndCrow · 11/10/2021 17:32

It is common for cats to be nutcases, if that helps . . .

GeidiPrimes · 11/10/2021 17:36

Stamping/pedalling back feet is mating behaviour in cats. Mine do it with soft things, like blankets. I won't detail what that leads on to Envy

MassiveHoard · 11/10/2021 17:45

Yes totally normal & very funny

VirtualLife · 11/10/2021 17:47

Very normal, most cats do this. They're trying to kill/disembowel their prey and they use their back feet to do it!

Well yes, I've had cats all my life and seen all sorts of play behaviour, they've all displayed the lying down holding something and bunny kicking it, but I've never seen one stand over it and violently stamp on it with one hind foot, like a human angrily squashing a cardboard box.

I've never seen that, but would very much like toGrin

Grin It is a sight for sore eyes!

On wildlife programmes I've seen birds stomping on snakes, and that's as close as I can get to describing it.

Yes. As @StellaAndCrow and said - cats are nutters. However, I think we need a video to determine if it's normal nutcase behaviour or extra special nutcase behaviour.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2021 11:17

Our Bengal would stamp his front paws if not getting his own way.

Our new girl was owned by retired people an d I don’t know if they played with her much but she does the positioning over hair ties then eventually flops over.

I bought a squeaky mouse but when she went to touch it and it squeaked she was very “oh I’m terribly sorry” and left it alone.

I asked him, but he said he doesn't perform to order Grin
