Cat hungry all the time, will wet food help?

So my cat went up to nearly 6kg over Covid lockdown, all our fault as we fed her far too much. She was on a dry Royal Canin vet urinary diet, so we changed it to a weight management dry food as she needed to lose the excess.

She's now 4kg but always starving, she gets 25g in the morning and 25g in the evening. She begs for food all the time and I'm always tripping over her!

I've looked into it and cats are meat eaters and a lot of vets have said give them wet food. So I bought some wet pouches, stopped the dry food and she's like a different cat. She seems more satisfied, and not waking me up at 4am 😁 she's having 3 pouches a day but I'm worried she will put weight on again (it says 3 for a 4kg cat).

It's Felix I've bought which I know isn't the best quality, but I'm doubting whether this is the right thing to do. Should I stick with the Royal Canin as I know it's good quality or give her the wet food which makes her happy.

Royal Canin isn't great quality tbh
Can you not give a mix of wet and dry?
Mine get dry food left out and then wet food twice per day

Our cat was obese when we adopted him. One of the ways we got him to lose weight was to show down his eating. We use <a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=www.catit.com/uk/shop/catit-senses-2-digger/" target="_blank">this slow feeder for his dry food. He was not impressed at first Grin. I'm also jun by him very gradually to a grain-free dry food. Cats are obligate carnivores, and would not normally eat 'bread'. He gets 3-4 sachets of wet food at 3 meals, and 25-30g of dry food to graze on during the day. But 6kg is the right weight for him - yours would need proportionately less.

My cat has 3 pouches a day and biscuits to graze . Cats like a mixture of textures so mixing a pate type of food such as Lily’s Kitchen also keeps him happy until the next meal .

We feed mix of wet and dry.
Good quality high meat content dry food would be worth trying such as purizon. We leave dry out all day to graze on, a sack lasts us 6 months.
Wet we give lily's kitchen pate or natures menu pouches. I also give aldi chicken breast as a treat.

I wonder if you should leave dry out to graze to see if cat self regulated.

These tins are good too for a hungry cat.

You have trouble because you have a v food driven cat who needs a urinary diet.

So you are stuck with weighing portions of urinary cat food, rather than switching to grain-free food which is known to make them fuller for longer, or a satiety food, which otherwise would have been the best options. So sad that there aren't cat foods that address multiple health issues!

Felix wet food is TBH the MaccyD's of the cat food world and is just going to be more calories. A small amount of a grain free wet food might cut down the moaning - Animonda Carny is popular in our house.

However the most successful tool with my food monster cats has been engaging their brains and introducing slow feeders - takes them much longer to eat so you get peace and quiet for longer and they actually get to register that their stomachs are full.

I have one of these:

As others have said royal canin really isn’t good quality food either. If you feed grain free high meat content wet food she will need less to meet her requirements and feel full for longer.

Dilbertian · 10/10/2021 14:07

Do you use that for wet or dry food, AnnaMagnani?

AnnaMagnani · 10/10/2021 16:32

I use it for dry, cat pokes each bit of kibble out with her paw.

But I recommended it to a friend and she uses it for wet so apparently can do either!

Silkycat was horrified when it first arrived but when she realised it was learn or starve, she picked it up soon enough. She now has another which is even trickier as well.
