How many litter trays

We are getting 2 kittens in a couple of weeks, brother and sister. Will we be ok with the one litter tray or will we need one for each kitten?
Have this fear of the house smelling like cats and poo now!?

Ideally one per cat plus one more.

ItsSnowJokes · 07/10/2021 18:08

Minimum of 2 needed. And yep your house will smell of cats and poo (clear it out as soon as they have pooped which does help) for a while. Especially until they can go outside. However, I wouldn't change it for the world. They bring so much joy, fun and love.

My two kittens are now five or six months, and happily shared one tray.

(They now crap outside.)

PeacheyPeach · 07/10/2021 19:02

Do you need two even when they are tiny kittens?

We started with 2 but they only ever used 1 so we just used 1 extra large one in the end

PeacheyPeach · 07/10/2021 19:44

Aww I will keep this one for now as it's quite big and see how they get on. I'm trying to think we're to put a second one really!!
Also do your cats have a bed for themselves or do they share??

Mine never really used beds much. They do like a cardboard box though!

PeacheyPeach · 07/10/2021 20:05

Oh that sounds so cute 😍

They sleep smooched up together on whatever surface they fancy. Very rarely is that their cat bed!

icedcoffees · 07/10/2021 22:34

Three litter trays - please don't force them into sharing as you could end up with rivalry over the area and that can lead to accidents and even cystitis if it continues for too long.

dementedpixie · 07/10/2021 22:36

I have 2 cats and they were happy with 1 big tray. We had 2 trays but they only used 1.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 07/10/2021 22:44

I have two cats. It is one per cat plus an extra. We have three trays. They wont use a dirty tray. We have our trays in a bathroom.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 07/10/2021 22:45

We have cat beds. they dont use them. One cat has stolen the dog’s bed though. One cat uses a cat radiator bed. They mainly sleep on sofas or human’s beds.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2021 12:05

My two share one tray. I'm skeptical about needing one each.

YodaiamsaidI · 08/10/2021 19:50

My older cat wont use litter tray, always goes outside,8 month old who we've had 3 months has 2 trays and she uses both, one upstairs one down.

ThirdElephant · 08/10/2021 20:05

You need three. The rule is one per cat plus one more. Ideally one on each floor of your house.

It's fine if they're happy to share but they should still have a choice not to if that's what they prefer.

Too few litter trays can cause toileting and behavioural problems.

ragged · 08/10/2021 21:40

I am in fortunate position of having a large house, so it's nice to have several trays, not having to move just one around to close to where kittens are.

Notdoingthis · 09/10/2021 00:09

We had 2 for 2 kittens. They use one for poo and one for wee... How did you get them going outside at 5 months?? I hate changing litter but they are so well trained.

Madwife123 · 09/10/2021 16:07

I would get 2. If they only use 1 then you can remove 1. But if you only have 1 and find you have the type of cat that doesn’t like to share a litter tray or likes to use 1 for wee and 1 for poo then it’s a LOT harder to solve a cat that now thinks the floor is a litter tray!
