What dried food gives the most Protein for the buck?

Had a good recce around the pet shops yesterday and looked at the back of all the bags I could find.

I was very surprised by the low protein content in most of them. To put it into context, the Lidl one has 36% meat and most of the ones didn't reach that.

There were one or two that were higher % but were expensive.

The Lidl one suits our budget (we're only on one income at the moment so frugality is key) but is there any others that give that much meat in a similar price range? I'd like to explore any other option.

The more meat, the higher the price. Mine eat thrive dry. I buy it from Amazon usually

Have a look on zooplus for grain free high meat food

Make sure you are comparing dry matter values - quality foods tend to do this, cheaper foods tend to give as sold values even dry food can still be 20% water so when you take out the water that value changes.

I was buying cheap stuff but then iams was on offer and not much in it price wise so now I buy that as the cats won't go back. Just checked the packet and iams says 91% protein. Seems like a deal.

I'm not sure you're reading the packet correctly. Which Iams is it?

Generally, any dry food you can buy from a supermarket is going to be pretty poor quality. There may be the odd exception, of course.

I also find most pet shops only sell the main brands - I buy online as I just can't find what I want in any pet store near me! ZooPlus is a good website for buying pet food, or buy from the manufacturer directly if possible.

Iams kitten. Maybe not but there is a big notice on the front saying 91% protein.

Notdoingthis · 09/10/2021 13:46

I think it's 43% protein and of that 91% is animal protein?

I would only ever feed Thrive. It's the best of the bunch. I get mine on subscribe and save!
