Help me Tame a Tigress

Elderly neighbour has gone into hospital, I have agreed to look after their cat. Problem is cat is totally terrified, I don't know how long I'll need to care for her and I am worried she will become more withdrawn and anxious if I don't make the effort to befriend her properly.
Cat is female, less than 10 years old. Has been with current owner since she was a kitten and she has never been outdoors. She has apparently always been very timid, but worse since one of the couple passed recently, as they were her favourite apparently!
She hides and seems very scared whenever I go in. I've been going in two or three times a day, I always look for her but sometimes she hides herself so well I can't find her in the house. On the occasions I do find her I spend a few minutes talking to her and trying to get closer, if she hisses or growls I leave her alone. On two occasions she has purred and come to me to let me stroke her. I always leave some dreamies for her and once a day I leave a pouch of wet food out, when I go back she has always eaten it all. She has access to dried food all day too and obviously I change her water daily / clean out litter tray.

I see her sitting looking out the window when nobody is there, but as soon as she hears the key in the lock she runs and hides.

How can I help her become less anxious and more comfortable with me? Clearly she is traumatised by recent events and I just want to do the best for her. I'm a cat novice so any tips gratefully received! Thank you

She came and purred / snuggled herself up to me and DH today for a good few minutes! She did then quickly turn, hiss and bat me away but I will take a small win Grin

Aw will you beable to take her on full time if you have to?

We have considered it, I am still unsure if it would be best for her however as we are planning on getting a dog in the new year. I wonder if it would be better for her to find another older person who is indoors more without any other pets as she is so so nervous I think a dog may be too much for her.

Their not keen on dogs. Cinnamon trust used to do cat rehoming for cats whose owners can’t keep them anymore or pass away.

Ah she’s a poppet. I have a terrible weakness for tabbies. I wonder if she is feeling a bit strange being in an empty silent house, would it be possible to leave a radio on quietly for her so she has the sound of voices.

She is warming to you though, I think you need to be thinking about where her food and basket would fit into your house .

EachandEveryone · 14/10/2021 11:20

I agree and the dog situation might go really well if she has high up places to go.

Progress update: she allowed us to stroke her today, first time without hissing. Son of neighbour has told us that neighbour hopefully home next week and no plans to rehome tigress just yet

Wow she is no stranger to a fish supper is she??.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 16/10/2021 20:16

Glad to hear that she is making progress and that her full-time cat slave is due to come home soon.

And @Brollywasntneededafterall, that made me laugh"

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 16/10/2021 20:16

laugh!

No she certainly is not, bless her. Her belly wobbles when she runs (to her food bowl). She obviously doesn't really get much exercise being an indoor cat so is definitely big and beautiful

She's lovely, and what a good neighbour you are to care for her.

tocas · 19/10/2021 07:40

I honestly could never say no to caring for an animal in need, I am a total softy!
I have been leaving the radio on for her as per pp's suggestion and I think it has made her a bit less skittish. I have been feeding her one small pouch of wet food a day and leaving a large bowl of dried food, but yesterday evening she was obviously hungry so I think I have been underfeeding her and will give two pouches a day now. Does that sound reasonable? Obviously she isn't going to waste away but I don't want her being hungry, and she might mellow a bit more if she isn't!

Oh fingers crossed for her.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/10/2021 08:06

Oh no, poor girl she’s having a terrible time of it. Does the owner want to rehome or is she going to get back to an empty house?

This I am not sure of because it is DH who has been liaising with the son. I would feel very uncomfortable if he has not spoken to her about it though obviously. We (DH and I) have agreed we won't see her go to a shelter so either we find somewhere for her to habe a lovely home or we take her ourselves. I've got several interested parties thinking about having her so she will get the love she deserves.

Oh, and since i have been giving her two pouches a day she runs to greet me, purring and neck rubbing Grin

She’s easily pleased isn’t she? I think mine was on short rations with her first owner, she’s got loads more energy now on wet and indoor cat dry.
