Litter trays with high sides or covered over top

Hello all
We have a lovely tabby kitten and we're keeping him in at night, probably until he's at least a year old (next spring).

We have a litter box (open tray style) but he typically kicks at the litter, after he's peed, to cover it up. He does this wonderfully well to the extent that the surrounding floor looks like a Jackson Pollock mistake.

Has anyone tried the litter boxes with high sides, or the ones with a lid over the top? Does this work in reducing the pebbledash effect?

Definitely get one with a lid and a filter at the top- absolutely worth the money. Mine was about £29 in pets at home

I use large storage boxes like this but without lid. Even the 13 week old kittens can get in & out fine. No mess.

I also use large under bed storage boxes that seem to keep everything in.

I vaguely remember what it was like to go out for nights out in bars with friends. Then the dreaded trip to the ladies. Which often involved tiny cubicles where you had to shimmy around between door and toilet to then be able to shut the door.

I basically retain that memory when thinking about litter trays! So I’ll always go for a larger size. And definitely a lid - who wants to be exposed when goi g to the loo? It helps stop spray exiting the tray, helps keep litter contained. I have a ridged mat at the front to help catch the few pellets that he tracks when he exits.

The best combo for me is large, hooded tray plus wood pellet clumping litter (Cats Best). It can look expensive on paper, but if you have a large deep tray, then the waste clumps well on the surface and requires fewer full tray clean outs.

Thank you all and I love the ladies-cubicle-nights-out example. Good idea about the storage boxes too.

I have a high sided one which helps with her kicking out the litter. Love it.

I also use a storage box. Works well to contain the mess!

Top entry style, perfect. The 'lid' is textured to reduce tracking. My kitten managed to jump in from about 16 weeks. Got mine from Zooplus.

We have this one

One of mine deliberately attempts to kick litter out of the box but she can't manage it with this one.

I remember when buying ours thinking about cost...."ooo that's pricey maybe I won't get that one..." - but it is the thing they use multiple times a day.....so on reflection like a child car seat or buggy....it's worth investing in.

Our cats use the ones with lids and swing doors. We have a large rectangular one in the hall and a corner one in the kitchen. There is a little bit of mess I sweep up when cleaning it out in the morning....but not enough for me to get a mat.
