Can shutting a cat in a room cause stress?

DH went out last night and shut our 1yo cat in the bedroom. Before he left I asked him if he'd gotten all the cats out (to which the response was yes) so I thought nothing more of it.

Anyway, six hours later I go up to bed and find Toby trapped upstairs looking absolutely petrified. Luckily he'd not had an accident but he'd knocked over a lot of things (not just little things - a huge mirror and a fan) and we came down this morning to find he'd peed in the bath and pooped by his water bowl.

He's eaten breakfast and lunch no bother, been to the toilet in his tray no bother (wees and poos) had a snack (fresh chicken) and had plenty of water since so I'm assuming it's related to the "being trapped in the bedroom incident?"

DH has shut him upstairs before but this time he closed our bedroom door as well so I just couldn't hear him :(

They don't like being trapped especially if there's no access to food or litter tray. Mine don't like shut doors in the house and will miaow to get in the kids bedrooms if they have the audacity to have the door closed!

Yeah, that's what I figured!

I'll keep an eye on him just in case it's cystitis or something but he seems okay enough in himself :)

I have to shut my old lady (22) in the front room or she'd live outside.
It takes her at least two weeks to get over being indoors at night and even then she sometimes craps on a cushion to remind me how much she hates it.
It can really unsettle em.

Yes, he's quite sensitive and nervous in general, bless him Sad

I shut dcat out of most rooms because I don't want her hair everywhere, she's allowed in if we are there but if alone/night she gets the kitchen and hallways only

Update:

Unfortunately Toby ended up at the emergency vet with a diagnosis of cystitis - £120 lighter and we have antibiotics and painkillers which he's taken very easily!
