I feel like my house stinks

I have a 1.5 year old Bengal female who does use her litter trays for both wees and poos but will wee in other places too (full wees, not spraying).

I've lost track of where she has even gone to now, I feel like there's a constant smell of cat urine and I hate it. I don't even know where to begin to get rid of it. Will I have to replace my carpets if it's dried into there?

How do I eradicate this smell? (And her bad habit!)

How many trays and which litter? My Bengal did the same but they are prone to uti as a breed.

Get a UV torch for a pound plus postage on eBay. They show up tribe so you can target with an enzymatic cleaner.

Pee. Not tribe. No idea where that came from Grin

I feel your pain. My tabby has started peeing on a spare bed. Never had this issue before and now very anxious to open the room door. I sprayed the mattress with an enzyme cleaner and there is no smell but he can obviously smell it because he goes straight to the spot for a sniff. Not sure what to do.

I had a cat who would pee all over the house. After a trip to the vet to rule out physical problem we put litter trays all over the place. At one point we had seven. It’s Bette to have a tray behind the sofa than random wee. She was becoming senile, which can’t be your problem. We were able to reduce the number of trays but still needed 4. The uv torch was useful and either enzyme cleaner or bio washing powder are effective for removing the smell.

Has she been to the vet to be checked for cystitis or a UTI? One of the main symptoms is urinating out of the litter tray.

However, she may not like the litter or the locations of the trays - cats like privacy when they use the toilet and many types of litter are too big/rough for their paws.

Accidents need to be cleaned up with a proper pet enzyme spray, too.

Thank you for your responses.

She does use the litter tray often, but goes elsewhere to wee as well. I'll get her booked in with the vets to make sure she doesn't have a UTI.

A worry is that because I don't know some of the places she has urinated, it will be dry/have been there for a long time so they smell won't come out? Or will the enzyme cleaner do this?

I moved in to a flat which had had 17 indoor cats living in it. Saturating things in a strong solution of bio washing powder does get rid of old smells, eventually. Repeated soaking with enzyme cleaner will too.

What solution/method did you use please? I'm totally clueless!

I use this simple solution cleaner. It comes in either a spray or this squirty bottle, which is better for really soaking things. I have foster kittens who have odd ideas about where to pee at the moment. Or you can use biological washing powder, just make up a very strong solution (cheaper than the Simple Solution). Whichever you use you need to really saturate the stained area and leave it for as long as you can. The uv torch will make the stains glow in the dark like magic.

Madwife123 · 05/10/2021 21:35

Is she neutered?

Mamamia35 · 06/10/2021 13:16

I really rate the Simple Solution one, it smells good. I've also used Urine Offf. Both work effectively.

Am now wondering if ours had a urine infection. Could it go away naturally?

chesirecat99 · 06/10/2021 13:38

I would get her checked by the vet.

You could try adding litter attractant to the litter trays to encourage her to use it. Other than a UTI, it could be stress, she might be scent marking her territory. You could try Feliway to see if that helps.

Lampe Berger. Not too expensive, the fluid lasts for the and it gets rid of the smell rather than covering it up. Everyone says they can't smell my two indoor cats litter tray.
