Litter tray odour control?

THwife · 02/10/2021 14:15

I have a sphynx cat, nearing 1 year old. And quite frankly, she stinks!! 😩 I live in a small 2 bed terraced house and the only viable place I can place her little tray is in my small hallway. I am seriously on the verge of revoking, purely because she smells so so so much. I’m embarrassed to even answer my door, as the smell hits you. I’m cleaning the tray daily, scooping daily, using catsan litter.
I don’t know how to control this odour? Any tips would be sooo appreciated. I don’t want to have to rehome my precious girl, but I also love my home and I’m sick of the smell.

That's a different one to the one I'm using, but thank you for the link though

No worries. It's an absolute game changer - literally just scoop the balls out and barely have to top up so lasts for months and months.

Cats best oko plus - terrible for tracking
Cats best smart pellets - still clumping and tracks less
Works best - was also OK but expensive

I used to use a mix up of the smart pellets and world's best in the tray but now I have clay clumping stuff as they rarely use a tray and its much cheaper

I use Canada clay clumping litter, either Tigerino or professional classic, Clumping silica and silica crystals and occasionally Worlds Best. I have nine cats and would never use something like ordinary Catsan, I'm not keen on wood pellets either as I find them messy and not good at odour control.

Ever Clean cat litter on Amazon is the best by FAR! that combined with a hooded cat tray has eliminated the smells.
I also light my Lampe Berger twice a day.

Wood litter 4 quid from tesco no smells

Furries · 18/10/2021 03:27

Others have said, but I’ll add to the list.

Catsan is crap. Get clumping wood pellets like Cats Best. Get a tray with a full lid. Go “large” with your litter tray. I’ve said it on another thread, I remember the days of socialising in the city and pubs having tiny toilet cubicles where you have to shimmy around to get the door closed. It’s not a nice feeling and isn’t one that I want my cat to have! A closed tray is also going to make the “experience” more private for them.

If you have a large hooded tray, with a good pellet clumping litter, you don’t need to do full tray changes, the litter is more expensive initially, but the cleaning up is more economical.

As an aside - considering reforming for this is not a good look.

As I've just changed the litter box (two Maine coons, just had the snip so not allowed out yet) after trying Catsun again and ugh it stank. So I'm trying one of the ones recommended above. I've tried natural litter before but it got spread all over the house. My male cat seems to wait until I've changed the box and immediately does something - usually before I've put any litter back in the tray! I have a poor sense of smell so am paranoid about it.

When I’ve noticed smelly trays it’s when people are just putting it in an inch deep and so basically there’s not enough there for the urine to sink in to.

I prefer wooden pellets as it can go on the compost heap and doesn’t get as smelly (poops scooped daily obviously).

I do a combo of cheap clumping clay litter and wood pellets. Less tracking and it keeps the smell down.

I also agree with what the others said about looking at the food. Have a look at high quality food - something that says Indoor Formula usually helps with smell. I spend a lot on food but to be honest, if its high quality, they eat less of it so it lasts ages.

Also make sure that kitty is not weeing outside of the box. I have a top entry box which stopped any accidents.
