Pooping in the bed

Long ish thread but grateful for any help!

So our total assassin and love bomber Truffle has been with us for about 6 months. Rescue kitten coming up to a year old. She had really liquid and stinky poos when she first came home which have touch wood rectified themselves with some special food, some steroids and possibly also age.

Anyway she first pooped in the spare bed a while ago. We put it down to her tummy issues. She did it again and we thought hmm that’s weird. Kept the door closed and hoped her tummy would sort it self out soon. Best friend came to stay the night a few months later and in the morning when she pooped out to brush her teeth cat ran in and crapped in the bed again.
We then put it down to her being territorial of the room (first room she was in in the house) and again kept the door shut at night.
Time moved along and our littlest moved into that room as her bedroom and zero issues. Last week husband was snoring so I put the mattress down on the floor in the box room which is an office and she never ever goes in and got the duvet out and slept there for a bit. In the morning went to get a shower and yep, on return, she’d pooped in that bed again. But totally different bedroom just the same combo of mattress and duvet.
Agh! Why is she doing this?! Two litter trays, she rarely uses either due to being out hunting constantly. Is this a protest against the thread count of the spare duvet?

What litter do you use? If they don’t like the litter they’ll seek out softer areas to toilet on.

Cats best. It’s what she was using at the rescue and she has used it happily (when she’s been inside if it’s raining or before she was allowed out) Just seems to be this particular bed.

My cat went through a phase of doing this, several years ago. It started when she was accidentally shut in the bedroom; I think the soft texture of the duvet made her think it was cat litter because she could scrape at it. After that, she actively sort out the duvet for toiletting, and I spent a lot of time and money at the launderette! We solved the problem by keeping the bedroom door closed at all times, for about six months, and she eventually forgot about it. She hasn't had an accident for years now.

If it's always the same duvet, has it been very thoroughly washed to remove any trace of smell that might encourage her to use it? If so, would putting it in the attic for six months be an option (perhaps using blankets and sheets in the meanwhile) so she forgets about it?

@WaltzingToWalsingham you might be into something. Yes we have washed it but I will happily replace both to remove any scent at all if that might fix it. Fingers crossed

You can get a liquid that has enzymes in it to saturate the area on the duvet before you wash it - the idea is that it removes all scent from whatever the cat's done and discourages them from going there again. We use 'simple solution' with the enzymes in it and it seems to work. Saturate the area and leave it for about 10 mins before washing. Regular washing might remove any smell as far as we're concerned, but cats' sense of smell will still pick it up on the fabric.
