Cat weeing in the sink

Advice needed please!

DS has just caught our male Dcat (7 months old) weeing in the bathroom sink. This is the second time we've seen him do this. For context he is one of two brothers. He was neutered a couple of weeks ago; his brother has not yet been neutered for medical reasons. We have plenty of litter trays that are cleaned regularly. No changes in his diet.

So why is he weeing in the sink? Confused And perhaps more importantly- how do I stop him weeing in the sink?!

They smell the fresh air through the plug hole.

Perhaps digging in the litter was painful post op? Perhaps he's always done it but never been caught?

Is he otherwise ok? Does he actually wee or just squat? When ours did this he had a blockage and couldn't wee, which is a cat emergency.

FurryGiraffe · 01/10/2021 18:01

Thanks both.

He is definitely weeing not just squatting. He seemed to make a very speedy recovery from the op but of of course you never know with cats. And as RandomMess says, it may have nothing to do with the op.

I'm just a bit stumped at how to manage it. I am a dab hand at discouraging cats from weeing on carpets but somehow I don't think enzyme spray will have much effect on a sink Grin

Out of interest, how have you managed to stop cats from weeing on the carpets?

RandomMess · 01/10/2021 18:15

I would just clean the basin before you use it!!

My experience is that they do this to feel the cool air from the plug hole on their bits when they’ve got a urinary issue so it’s worth keeping an eye on him. I suppose it could be from the surgery or a separate UTI.

Urinary issues can get very serious very quickly in boys, so make sure he’s properly hydrated. Water down his wet food a little (dry food is known for causing urinary issues) and offer more bowls of water in different places. Mine never drink from their flat bowls, only our drinks glasses and their cat water fountain, and never when it’s placed next to their food bowls (this is a thing) so I have water on the utility counter.

Forgot to add - it only took one time picking him up off the sink and plonking him into the litter tray as he was squatting down to discourage mine. Then I caught him in the shower tray so did the same and he never did it again.

Urine infection

Reading with interest because I have 2 brothers, one of whom I have caught a couple of times weeing in the sink. I have had several cats and never come across this before so it surprised me. My boys arent neutered yet - just under 5 months old and booked in in a fortnight - so that isnt the issue here. I dont think my boy has a urinary issue and he uses the litter trays easily too. Both of mine are obsessed with water though - watching us washing up, I mean, not scared of water as most cats are - and I did wonder if he just thought the sink was a place where water went!

My cats pee in the sink all the time! I think they can smell outdoors, don't get their paws wet or have to dig in soil or go outside. They've done it for ages and are fit and well.
I just run the tap and give it a wipe before using it. They prefer the bath plughole or the kitchen half sink.

My friend had this with her cat and it turned out to be a UTI. Apparently weeing there because it was cooling in some way, reduced the pain.
Worth a trip to the vet to check it out if it's just started happening

Some cats just like peeing in the sink - I had a female cat who liked peeing in the bath, lol. She was neutered and tbh it wasn't worth getting stressed about - we just rinsed the shower before using.

There are worse places he could be going Grin
