Bitten by a mouse that the cat brought in

I was in the midst of a wonderful and incredible dream in which lots of extremely interesting animals were coming into my house, one after the other. There was a stoat , small and large dogs, a tiny kitten (awwww but then it threw up a mouthful of worms so became instantly less 'awwww, and more ' ugh get away from me fluffball'), a large marsupial of some kind, and some large furry thing that was very cute until it regurgitated an entire dead something or other with the fur still on it. My DD was just looking out of the door, screaming 'oh my god I just saw a giant cockroach running past -on fire!' , and we were discussing the mad nature of the animals, when In the real world I was rudely awoken by

MNWAAAAARRRRRRR MNWARRRRRRRMNWARRRRR - the distinctive 'I've brought you a mouse' call of my fatter cat.

After stumbling down the stairs i met said poor mouse (and proud looking cat) and did what I usually do - pick it gently up (the mouse) And then, scared (unsurprisingly) it bit me (the mouse). Ouch.

After putting it (the mouse) gently out in the garden (hopefully not to be brought back in in a few minutes or more likely when I'm back sound asleep) I washed the cut and read all about rabies and tetanus. The NHS website on animal bites, helpfully states "If the bite has severed a body part like a finger or ear, wash it with tap water, wrap it in clean tissue, and store it in a plastic bag surrounded by ice so it can be transported to hospital." Confused. I have a small puncture wound. Grin

It's not going to kill me, is it? And what the hell is going on in my dreams?

That's happened to me before, as a kid... always rescuing mice off the cat, and one bit me. (I also got bitten by the school gerbil! 😄) . I was fine, but do you have any iodine you could put on it to disinfect it, that would be a good idea- or some savlon or tcp

SukiPook · 28/09/2021 00:31

Can't analyse your dream but I empathise, as mine are that bat-shit crazy too

I've twice been bitten by a mouse, once at work would you believe. Someone came in to my office and said there was a mouse on her computer keyboard; I went in and there it was so I picked it up and took it outside. While it was in my hand it bit my finger.

The second time was at home, my cat had brought the mouse indoors and I rescued it to put outside and it bit me.

Mouse bites are really tiny. Just clean it well and the next day you won't even see where you were bitten.

It may be worth calling the doctors. I got bitten by a stray cat and had to have a tetanus vaccine to be on the safe side lol. Unless of course you have had one in the past 10 years, then you dont need to.

foxgoosefinch · 28/09/2021 00:53

This happened to me, and the GP asked me to come in for a tetanus booster, so I’d just call your GP and check up on whether you need one!

I was otherwise fine 😂

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/09/2021 04:58

I've had this before. Rescued a mouse, which then bit the end of my finger and wouldn't let go (umgrateful little shit). Had to repeatedly shake my hand before it fell off.
I just cleaned my finger and carried on.

Also it says on the nhs page you’ve read

If the bite has broken the skin, you should seek immediate medical attention after cleaning the wound

Call 111 as you’re at risk of an infection and probably need a tetanus booster

Disinfect it and then buy a long handled dustpan. Could be without ours for rounding up mice that the cats bring in and getting them back outside.

Couldn't be without

@Hathertonhariden great idea.

And to everyone else-I seem to have survived this far. Grin

My top tip for mouse catching is to use a tea towel or similar. Drop the cloth entirely over them and they stop scurrying around because they think they've found somewhere safe. Scoop up the whole cloth and take them outside that way. Quickest and easiest way I've found to catch rodents and I've had a lot of practice over the years damn cats
Glad you are still alive with all limbs and digits intact!
