Is there such thing as a soft dry cat food?

My poor boy gets swollen lips when eating dry food but I’m struggling with the smell of wet food and he eats ten times more. Also we go away a lot and I like to leave dry food out for him to graze on rather than wet food that gets smelly. Is there such thing as a soft dry food? Can anyone recommend a brand that I can buy online?

Could you try putting some water on the dry food to let it soften?

That’s a good idea, just worried it will still get smelly though I guess not as bad as tinned food.

purina is half and half.
Hi-life used to make a soft one, but i fear it's discontinued.
I think it's worth searching around, there's probably something out there.

Thank you, I will keep looking, I’m sure I remember years ago (when I was a child) my mum feeding the cat a moist dry food, though my memory isn’t great and it may have been dog food 🤔. I’m sure something must exist.

I remember moist dry cat food but have not seen it for ages.

We have the Surefeed motion activated feeding bowl, would something Ike that work? It has a covered lid which retracts when the cat moves close enough to eat the food. It keeps wet food much fresher so it doesn't dry out, keeps the smells in and flies away. When we go away, we have someone come twice a day to feed them.

Thank you, I will have a look into the feeding bowl though he can only eat out of a ceramic or metal bowl, plastic seems to make his lip swell. We have some one pop in once a day when away but means food can be left lying around for almost 24 hours.

You can buy different types of bowls that go into this feeder, we have metal ones so hopefully that helps.

Water on dry food will just mean it grows bacteria quicker and not be pleasant.

If his lips swell that sounds like an allergic reaction. Have you tried different food?

Motorina · 28/09/2021 20:29

It won't be cheap, but I would check out Eden pet foods. They do a soft dry food for dogs (I use it as training treats because it's eyewateringly expensive but clearly delicious). I know they do cat foods, and I suspect will have a soft dry food. It will probably be far better quality than anything you would ever buy for yourself - organic venison, wild duck... - and priced to match.

Mind, knowing cats, that probably means he will refuse to eat it. Sigh.

Motorina · 28/09/2021 20:31

But no, it looks like they only do the semi-moist in dogs. Sorry.

Lovemusic33 · 28/09/2021 20:43

He does have allergies but to find out exactly what he’s allergic too will cost a lot of money so it’s a process of elimination 😬, he’s better with some brands than others but then gets bored and refuses them so then I’m back to square one finding one he will eat and not react too. I have ordered him a grain free food to try.

My ddog had allergies and we got the tails dry food for her and as she got older she was unable to eat dry food so I mixed it with hot water and a bit of gravy and left it to stand until if softened.
My apologies for talking about a dog on her but I was perusing the litter tray as we are getting a kitten Grin

Want2beme · 30/09/2021 10:43

Ask your vet if they know of one. Maybe Hills or Royal Canin make a soft dry food. Your cat does need wet food as well. Maybe you could mix some wet food with the dry. Does he drink plenty of water?

Lovemusic33 · 30/09/2021 10:50

He seems to be drinks plenty. New food arrived yesterday which was meant to be grain free and allergy friendly but his lip has already doubled in size 😭 so I had to give him wet food.

I remember in the 80s there were soft biscuits in pouches called Delikat, that's probably what you're thinking of. Not seen it for a long time though!
Lovemusic33 · 03/10/2021 09:44

That’s the one, I can remember it being in little packets.

I buy hedgehog food to put out for the hedgehogs and that is similar (soft dry food pellets), seems odd I can’t find any for cats.
