Cat weeing in indoor plant pot and near it

My 9 mth old kittens have decided my husband's favourite indoor plant / tree (which cost a ridiculous amount, is the perfect place for a wee, not only that but also have started to wee next to it on the floor.

I really need to stop them! Not only that but the flooring is new and still being laid, so they are not very popular at the moment.

Any advice from you experienced cat moms Smile

Where are your current trays and what sort of litter ate you using?

The litter tray is just off the room they are weeing in. Same litter type we have been using since we got them, catsan. They are still using the litter tray.

We had a similar problem with house plants - found that covering it up with a thick layer of pebbles put her off, along with a ring of bamboo skewers pointing up to break the habit

I was going to say pea shingle too.

Cats like to dig in soft earth unfortunately.

For two kittens you need three litter trays really - one per cat and one to spare.

Unfortunately your husband has basically bought them a very expensive toilet - it's natural for cats to dig and toilet in soft earth as they can then bury their business afterwards.

Pebbles or netting over the top should help stop it, and I would also clean the area around the pot with a pet enzyme cleaner and pop a litter tray there as well.

Yes, cover the soil with pebbles or twigs, I do the same when I replant my garden pots, I have acquired a collection of seashells, broken pottery, pebbles etc for this purpose.

Just an update

So i moved the pot and inserted lots of wooden skewers sticking out of the soil. I was very amused and watching my girl wiggle her way into the gaps to do her business, my husband less so.

She was also weeing next to the pot and wanted to wee in the corner where the pot had been. So I cleaned it up and then put a bowl of dried cat biscuits there as they don't like to toilet where they eat. That seems to have helped

You can’t have cats and nice things. It’s one or the other. She’ll probably get too big to go in it eventually.

My Bengal boy never scratched a sofa in his life until I bought a duresta velvet one. Life time ban from the lounge after he went to town on it and he stayed out of my way for a few hours.
