Night time crying

Our DC lives in the kitchen at night. We've had had about 18m and she's 2.5. Kitchen is nice and big with the cat flap so she can come in and out. On the odd occasion she's not in the kitchen she wakes us up in the night to be let out but is otherwise no bother. She isn't given free roam at night because of her fondness for mice. She spends most of her days sleeping on her cat tree in the kitchen.

For the first time since we got her I went down tonight for a drink and realised she was miowing at the door to be let out. She doesn't seem distressed but was very vocal and rubbing against me which isn't like her. She was making such a fuss in my way down that I thought she was in there with another cat or had perhaps hurt herself.

I've settled her and come up but I feel awful leaving her in there. She has food, drink, cat flap and her feliway. I don't know if she got excited as she heard me coming or if she's like this every night and I just don't hear her! Often when I shut the kitchen up at night she's already out for the night hunting so I was surprised to find her inside at midnight.

Not sure what I'm hoping to gain from posting but as I now can't sleep I thought writing it down might help.

Awww she probably just misses you. I know mine will scratch at our bedroom door to get in if it's closed. This morning when I woke up I had a cat snuggled me on each side! Cats like to feel safe and warm when they sleep, so of course often like to get cosy with their loved ones as you provide both warmth and safety.

If mice are the issue then could you close the cat flap at night but let her have free reign of the house? We keep ours locked in at night because it's safer - they're more likely to get into fights with other cats, and more likely to be hit by a car if it's dark. They've adjusted to this pretty well and will sleep through the night then go outside in the day.

*snuggled next to me

I keep mine in at night and they have free rein of the house. They just sleep and I usually wake up with one or more cats in bed with me.
Could you not lock the cat flap and let her walk around the house?

How warm is it in the kitchen and is her cat tree one of those ones with a proper bed on it? I’d give her another option of somewhere to sleep with her own designated bed in a warm spot - maybe the sitting room?

My cat is hugely spoiled and has a “baby’s bed” in four rooms of the house. He is a gigantic tabby bruiser with fearsome hunting skills but also needs reassurance at night. IMO one of the great pleasures of life is going to sleep and then waking up with dead legs because an enormous feline has been snoozing on them. Multiple cats also act like hot water bottles on cold nights. Win win Smile

Could she be feeling the cold? It was 2 degrees here the other night - is your kitchen heated and well insulated for her?

Mine have run of downstairs overnight and in winter I often find them buried in the blankets on the sofa or bundled up together to keep warm.

I would make sure she has a cosy bed and something to snuggle with as winter gets nearer.

I think she heard you coming and was pleased to see you (and breakfast)

I think I'm going to try going down another night. I'd like to say she was pleased to see me but I doubt it! She's not a friendly cat and wouldn't have any interest in sleeping on our bed, when we are downstairs she always takes herself to a different room to sit Confused
Keeping her in is an option but she's such an outdoor cat i suspect she would hate it and beg to be let out. I'll try it when I am off at half term and see what happens.
Kitchen is really large and at the moment warm so I don't think it's cold but I suspect she will feel the cold this winter as she's now a more "pet" cat whereas when we first got her she'd been living in a garage so was more used to the cooler weather. A couple of you have mentioned beds, she does have 2 in the kitchen (yes spoiled kitty) with blankets and insulated bases, she would alternate where she slept until this summer when she's flatly refused and now insists on sleeping right at the top of the cat tree on the smallest platform! I've maintained both beds blankets etc as I know she might change her mind about sleeping arrangements.
Madam was asleep down there when I went down at 7 and I'm pleased to report we had a mouse free night....unless she's brought another one in alive and it's hiding somewhere AGAIN!

DH just pointed out that she would have been able to hear me turning the alarm off before I even got out of bed so she might have thought it was morning/food time hence the excitement last night 🤦🏼‍♀️
