We have a lovely rescue kitty, we all love him, but dear Lord the litter!!!!!
He is using wood pellet type in a box with a lid and flap
The smell of a morning is awful
Any tips to help?
Can I change to a different type without it disturbing his toilet routine?
Anything I can do about it?
Currently I change the full tray every morning, wipe with antibacterial and then refill
Advice would be amazing if anyone can help please

Switch the litter and don't change it everyday - there's really no need to.

We use Cat's Best clumping litter and I probably do a full change every three weeks (we have three trays and three cats).

I scoop poos and clumps daily and that's it, really. Most smell is due to poor diet - what is the cat being fed?

Beamur · 21/09/2021 07:29

Kitty or kitten? My kittens made terrible smells, even on good food. Better as their guts mature.
A decent food does help though.

Theunamedcat · 21/09/2021 07:32

My cats litter smells after a couple of days but they do drink and pee alot they eat purina biscuits and hate wet food

Allergictoironing · 21/09/2021 08:11

I use wood pellet litter, in an open tray because Boycat is too scared to use a covered tray. I scoop out any poo and wet patches at least 3 times a day. They both go through phases of smelly poo, but as soon as they bury it (as long as they do so properly - Boycat, I'm looking at you here), you can't smell it. I give it a complete change about once a week.

captainpillows · 21/09/2021 10:50

Wow, I am doing a full change every day!
Litter box is in a big utility area too so plenty of ventilation
(Maybe I'm being over sensitive)
He's fed dry food and 1 pouch, the rescue centre advised to keep him on this diet
Plenty of water and the odd treat, he's doing so well
No problems at all from his end

Does the dry contain cereals? Their poo really smells if it’s got cereals in it. Ours is on Arden grange because it’s human grade meat.

icedcoffees · 21/09/2021 16:19

If they're on a low quality food, that will be causing the smell.

The rescue is right that you shouldn't change his diet right away, but don't let it stop you from changing it in the future. Cheap cat food really does make their poo smell awful - I noticed a HUGE change when we switched from Whiskas to Harringtons.

MyTwoBengals · 21/09/2021 16:28

I raw feed my two Bengals. I use wood pellets and their poo hardly smells. I know raw feeding is not for everyone, but high meat content and no cereal is best for cats.

TheQueef · 21/09/2021 16:32

Felix pouches?
One of mine can no longer have wet food, ever since catching gardia.
If she has Felix it becomes napalm in under 60 minutes.
Any wet food gives her bum turbos but Felix is special.

gunnersgold · 21/09/2021 16:35

Use catsan , less smelly than others !

gunnersgold · 21/09/2021 16:35

Also get a litter tray that's enclosed with a filter to absorb the smells a bit .

Motorina · 21/09/2021 19:20

I was using value litter and having to do a change every couple of days. Now I'm using cat's best and haven't done a full change in weeks. It's a world less awful.

It looks expensive, but I'm still on my first bag, whereas I was getting through a bag or more a week of the cheap stuff.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2021 21:49

We have 2 trays - one large covered and one open (massive , its an underbed storage box!)
They tend to use the big one but there's the odd pee in the smaller one if Madam wants privacy .
We don't use antibacterial cleaner (just steam) I think the cats would try and outdo the scent

Cats Best Litter . Pee clumps . Poo smells reduced (if they bury)
Nice and soft on their delicate paws

Changing their biscuits to grain free (done gradually) has improved hugely
Only get a "bloody hell cat" one if they;ve been out eating snails Envy

PainterInPeril · 21/09/2021 22:05

We need a photo of your little kitten, that's the law here on MN! Please?

Albgo · 21/09/2021 22:32

@gunnersgold

Use catsan , less smelly than others !
Yep. I use cheap wood pellets from Pets at home and then put a thin layer of Catsan over the top to stop the smell.
Sleepinghyena · 21/09/2021 22:39

I use woodpellets for my two, and no smells. It's the food that's the problem.

icedcoffees · 22/09/2021 07:24

@gunnersgold

Use catsan , less smelly than others !
I'm always surprised to hear people say this as I think it smells awful Blush
Snailhaterz2 · 22/09/2021 08:51

Wood pellets here - scooping out wet/solid bits a few times a day. Also, added fun for kittens as they LOVE chasing spare pellets around the floors. Sigh.

Machchchengo · 22/09/2021 08:55

I use recycled paper pellets, they're way less messy/smelly than than the wood ones. The brand I use is breeder celect. Saying that as pp said smelly cat poo is usually due to poor quality/cheap food. My cat only eats good quality dry foods and her poo doesn't really smell.

Oldraver · 22/09/2021 09:48

My kittens came to me on Whiskas dry and Felix wet, the smell changed within days off getting the off it

cartreffi · 13/02/2024 13:26

I'm in such a predicament. My lovely cat has had severe cat flu since birth and therefore not insured. So far I've spent nearly £800 in consultations and antibiotics, nothing works. He is mainly ok but constantly snotty. Up until now (18 months old) he has been fine with it but the last few days he's been really poorly. I took him to the vet yesterday and spent over £100 on yet more antibiotics and an injection to bring his temp down. I have just applied for a 0% credit card as I don't have any disposable income with 3 children, and I'm worried that I'm spending all my disposable income on my cat. What do people do in this situation?

cartreffi · 13/02/2024 13:27

Sorry this was meant to be a new post!

Canthave2manycats · 15/02/2024 18:22

Our new rescue boy (here 6 weeks tomorrow!) left foul deposits in the litter tray - it would literally make you gag and your eyes water! Never smelt worse.

Someone recommended Scrumbles dry food and it has saved our lives!

Canthave2manycats · 15/02/2024 18:23

We use own brand Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys wood pellet litter for our three.

stravagante · 18/02/2024 10:08

We use vancat litter which has been a total game changer
It's pricy but we rarely need to change the full tray ever even with two cats who are locked in every night and who stay in the house when it rains
I have baby powder smelling stuff and they don't bother about it at all
It is so much better than the litter we used before
