Multiple teeth out, not eating

Does anyone have experience with their cat having multiple teeth out, when did they start eating again?

Mine had quite a lot taken out under general anaesthetic (5 or 7 I think) and didn't eat for around 4 or 5 days afterwards.

The vet said to give poached chicken or fish but he didn't seem to fancy that.

I just kept putting little bits of fresh food down till he started eating again.

CrystalMaisie · 09/09/2021 12:44

@OnlyFlans Thankyou for your reply, that’s reassuring to hear.
I’ve put down so many different things, he licks them sometimes but hasn’t really eaten anything. We’re on day 6. I’ve bought pate this morning to try!

My cat had 9 out and started eating a day or two later. She’s quite old anyway and just seems to like the soups so maybe try them?

CrystalMaisie · 09/09/2021 14:15

@Endeavormorse I’ve tried the soups, and also making a soup from some special vet food. Neither tempted the cat to even try.

Day 6 seems a long time. Will he let you look in his mouth? Can cats get dry socket or anything? Have the vets done a check up yet?

Mine was eating the next day and she had a canine plus several back teeth removed bless her.

What's the food he would have grabbed from you otherwise? Here it's ham or tuna....

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/09/2021 15:14

I’d go back to the vet, he might have an infection or the remaining teeth might be rubbing on the gums causing pain.

My boy needed extra painkillers after his first dental.

WitchBaby · 09/09/2021 15:21

Day 6? I'd agree he needs to go back to the vet. My old cat had most of her teeth out a few years ago and I'm sure she was eating after a day or so.

usernotfound0000 · 09/09/2021 15:28

My cat had 6 teeth out on Monday and is now eating as normal. Have they been for a check up? Mine had hers this morning and the vet thinks she may have an infection so had a short course of antibiotics now. I would definitely get them looked at if it has been 6 days, there could be something else going on.

AmandaHugenkiss · 09/09/2021 16:58

I’d get him back to the vet; mine started eating at 12 hours despite stitches. Too long without food can cause cats real issues. There might be an infection at play causing issues.

CrystalMaisie · 10/09/2021 20:34

Thanks for all your advice. Yes he had been back for a check up on Monday, and I took him back again today.
He has fluid in his abdomen, totally unrelated it seems. Been referred to a veterinary college for tests (estimate 4 grand 😳).

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/09/2021 21:59

Oh lord. Is he insured?

WitchBaby · 11/09/2021 00:45

4 grand? 😬
How is he in himself, has he eaten anything yet?

CrystalMaisie · 11/09/2021 07:18

@WitchBaby, he ate something at the vets yesterday morning after being given fluids and an appetite stimulant. He’s been very lethargic.

@Fluffycloudland77 Yes he is insured, up to 4 grand (seems a coincidence they asked on the form what the insurance limit was). Not insured for teeth though, which was a grand. Don’t know how much his trip at the vets yesterday morning was either, a drip and appetite stimulant and ultra sound. Plus the insurance excess, it’s been a costly week. But the main thing is that he gets better. Praying it’s something common and treatable 🙏🏻. Where he is comes highly recommended and one of the best in the country apparently.

How old is he OP? Did pre anaesthetic bloods before the dental show up anything out of the ordinary?

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/09/2021 08:17

£1k for teeth? Do you live in Monaco 😮

WitchBaby · 11/09/2021 17:07

Oh bless him. It's good you have insurance then. Poor thing hope he is better soon Thanks

WitchBaby · 11/09/2021 17:09

@Fluffycloudland77

Yes that seems an awful lot. Ours was about £550 for most of her teeth out, mind you that was a few years ago now.

Defiantly41 · 11/09/2021 17:15

@NotMyCat is the expert on (almost) toothless cats, I thin her Ollie has just one tooth.

Fingers crossed your cat gets through this ok

CrystalMaisie · 11/09/2021 17:55

He’s 6.

We live in the south east, can hardly get an appointment, there is a vet shortage I believe (poss due to all the extra pets bought in lockdown?)

No diagnosis yet. Fip and lung cancer both been mentioned and not ruled out yet 😔

CrystalMaisie · 11/09/2021 17:57

@Chunkymenrock I think they were all slightly askew, and put down to having not eaten I think, but raised bilirubin was the main one. His spleen, liver and kidneys however are all fine.

OP posts:
CrystalMaisie · 11/09/2021 17:59

@WitchBaby he’s licked at the odd bit of food I believe, same as he’s been doing at home. He’s on iv fluids.

NotMyCat · 11/09/2021 20:27

My boy has just one tooth yes Smile
Couple of things you can try that aren't too expensive, most from pets at home and you can get just one tin/pouch
Lick e lix or any form of lick treats
Cat milk
Nutritional yeast on top of food
Sardines in tomato sauce
Natures menu wet food is soft and strong smelling
Warm water on food
Cat soups
Applaws often appeals

NotMyCat · 11/09/2021 20:29

Also hand feeding. The vet tried to give mine boiled chicken and he was all "why you no roast it like mama?" And looked sadly at them
They discovered he would eat if hand fed roast chicken off the hot counter Hmm

CrystalMaisie · 12/09/2021 06:55

@NotMyCat thanks for the ideas. If we get him home, I will try them.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/09/2021 13:40

@NotMyCat just imagining a vet nurse being dispatched to the supermarket for fresh chicken. 😂😂😂
