Cat in an apartment?

Hi everyone looking for some advice please.

I’m an experienced cat 🐱 owner. I really, really want to adopt a cat preferably elderly/middle aged that we can spoil and treat.

However, I now live in an apartment rather than a house. All of my cats have always been indoor cats but that was in a two bed house. I’m just wondering if anyone else has housed a cat in a flat (lol) and whether anyone feels that it is cruel/irresponsible to do so? I’m really not sure. Friends have said it isn’t an issue but I wanted to get some broader opinions.

Thanks in advance 🐈

We took in a stray. Initially he was an indoor/outdoor cat, but he kept getting into scrapes and coming back injured.

He was also being eaten alive by ticks from the local woods. One time we had to take ten off him in a single day, some the size of gooseberries.

Every time he got infested with them he got ill with either an ear infection or an eye infection. Then one of the ticks gave me Lyme Disease.

Reluctantly we decided to keep him inside and expected lots of escapologist behaviour, especially as when he was a stray he was very adept at breaking in.

Hasn’t tried to get out once. Loves it. Sits in the front window to watch the birds in the morning and the back window in the afternoon. His fur looks so glossy and amazing now, especially compared to when he was a stray.

I think he enough of being outside for a lifetime when he was astray and now prefers cushions quite frankly.

I've always had indoor cats.

I currently have three in a terraced house, but my previous two were flat-cats. We put mesh over the windows (we were on the third floor) so we could have fresh air in the summer but otherwise it was just fine.

People will always have an opinion and as you can see from a PP, some will say it's cruel but as long as you can provide appropriate enrichment, indoor cats can live very long and happy lives.

In many countries it's illegal to let your cats out to roam :)

@Notdoingthis

If you are in a flat where do you dispose of the litter when you change it? Do you take it to an outside bin each time?
Yes. And never try to wash the tray out in the bath... 🙄

@Viviennemary

I don't approve of indoor cats. Its cruel.
I have a ragdoll who is actually not allowed to be outside due to breed. They have to be kept as indoor cats only, wouldn't survive outside. What would be cruel, Is if I let her out to be killed.

I have an indoor cat. I inherited her from my mum who inherited her from someone else. First owner never let her out. Mum did into her patio garden. We have a large garden but She has no outdoor skills and is scared of grass!!! Regardless she is very happy indeed. Go for it OP - plenty of cats need rescuing who would be very happy indoors (for various reasons)

I also have a ragdoll 😍 as well as a Maine coonX! What you've said is so true, certain cats don't have the street smarts to survive outside. What would be cruel is to knowingly put a cat in danger by letting them roam when they aren't suited to it!!
My MCX is basically a glorified (and very fluffy) throw pillow 😂

Gizmo was born in a flat and now he lives with us in a flat, no access to garden but he seems happy enough, he sits on the window sill watching the world go by

I nearly asked this question on here the other day as I'm desperate for a cat, this is the first time in my life I've never had one.
I do keep talking my way out of getting one as I live in a flat, you guys aren't making it easy for me to keep saying no

Aww, my flat cat was called Gizmo Smile

Sadly I had to leave him with my ex when we split up - he was a big snuggly ginger baby! Loved a cuddle and cried if I shut him out of the room when I was having a bath Grin

I have a middle aged cat in a one bedroom flat and he's perfectly happy. He has access to a wide external window ledge for fresh air and sunbathing, and he could jump down if he wanted to but hasn't ever tried it despite having had outdoor access in the past ; he's too much of a nervous nelly, the kind who comes running back in yowling for help if a bird dares to fly past Grin

I run a cat charity in France. I'm desperate to find someone like you for a little kitten with poor eyesight. It would be too dangerous to go outside. We're quite rural though. I can't find the right person for her.

Aw I hope you find someone soon can she not go to your nearest city?
