Does your cat wake you all night?

Our two are just a year old.

One cat is pretty good overnight, patrols the house, wakes us about 6/6.30 but generally quiet.

The other one is constantly on our pillows miaowing or waking us up. All night. If we trap her in the living room overnight, she clambers at the door to get out like a mad thing.

How do yours sleep? They are still fed 3 times a day and we lock their cat flap on their last feed at 7/8 as I’d prefer them to be in overnight.

How can we all get some sleep and encourage the night owl to get about it’s business quietly through the night? Agh.

We don’t have this now, though that’s partly as we now let our cat go out whenever he wants. I don’t much like it but there you go.

Before, when we would keep him in, we’d lock him in another bedroom, and he would be mithering half the night. They are very determined but eventually he did get used to it.

Have you tried trying to tire them out with games before bed?

sheeplikessleep · 03/09/2021 21:14

Annoyingly the one who is constantly miaowing doesn’t go further than our back garden! Whereas the quieter one is the explorer. So if I let one out, they both go out and I’d prefer the explorer to not be out and about on the roads when it’s dark, though maybe I have to accept we will end up down this route.

To be fair, the noisy one is also noisy during the day, miaowing a lot, which she does apart from when she’s asleep.

How long did it take yours to settle overnight (before you let him outside)?

I have this rose tinted view of them just pattering around the house. They’re both zonked out now but come 10 or 11pm, the noisy one particularly will be up and about everywhere 🤦🏻‍♀️

We let them out! Cat 1 goes in and out all night. Cat 2 curls up on our bed and doesn't move much for the next 10 hours. If I tried to force cat 1 to stay in he'd maiow endlessly

sheeplikessleep · 03/09/2021 21:15

I’ll try and play with them a bit more before bed, as I do tend to flake out after tea!

Yep, comes for a cuddle sometimes more than once between 12-6, miaows , biffs my face if I don't stroke her or don't stroke her for long enough. Its a blessing and a curse..

NapoleonOzmolysis · 03/09/2021 21:36

We have a bowl of dry food outside our bedroom door, so they come up looking to cause trouble but get distracted by the food and get no further. Works 80% of the time, we get woken by crunching rather than a paw to the face.

RandomMess · 03/09/2021 21:40

Nope they are shut away overnight after being given a few treats. Not a peep out of them for 10 hours although usually they are released after 8 obviously.

The cats ask to be put to bed!

minipie · 03/09/2021 21:43

Ours is shut in the kitchen. She also has an automatic feeder which spits out food at regular intervals (incl late at night and early morning) and her catflap is left open. She’s fairly nocturnal and tends to come in and snooze most of the day.

mayblossominapril · 03/09/2021 21:44

That’s why ours sleeps in the garage. No one wants their hair pulling or face pawing or if said sleeping human keeps ignoring cat a claws out swipe round the face.
Food, water, litter tray and a choice of beds including on the boiler are provided.

Theunamedcat · 03/09/2021 21:44

Mine sleep with us ash cat sleeps by my head and if he hears me wake will snuggle in for a cuddle my sons cat alternate between my window and his my third will roam about a bit and occasionally yowl but he then sucks his blanky and goes off to sleep too

HaroldMeeker · 03/09/2021 21:52

We shut ours in to their own room with food, beds, trays and toys at about 11pm, after at least an hour of play. By the end of that they need refuelling, but they are only 4 months old. We did the same routine with previous kittens and for the rest of their lives, they asked to go to bed, they liked the routine. We tried giving them the run of the house and gave up as we got no sleep at all.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 03/09/2021 21:57

Young cats are a pain in the arse, they don't sleep, once they get a bit older they are better especially if they go out. With the exception of my new 11 year cat,
She always gets the zoomies at 3 in the morning and crashes about waking me and probably the neighbours too.

Galaxyinmypocket · 03/09/2021 21:58

If they are both in they get locked in a room with everything they need.
Cat 1 likes to be indoors, usually very respectful and doesnt bother us so I let her roam. On the odd occasion she can become mischievous at 4am and run wild around the house but mostly she just chills on the floor in the bedroom as she likes to be around us.

Cat 2 is crazy if left to roam indoors through the night, squirming and snuggling up, pawing at us or the pillows meowing loudly and scratching at doors he cant get into. Mostly he gets chucked out at night, unless its winter and freezing outside. He loves being out though!

Clarkey86 · 03/09/2021 22:17

If you can’t put them in their own room, can you shut your door? We use a clear plastic carpet cover that goes under the door to protect them from ripping the carpets up.

Mine are pretty good as they’re older but we have a Maine coon who does a great job of waking you up when he comes and takes up most of the bed

WildFlowerBees · 03/09/2021 22:19

One of mine is an absolute pain in the arse, she scratches the doors if we lock her out of the bedroom, meows. If we hang something off the door so she can't scratch she'll tear up the carpet elsewhere. If we leave the door open she dicks around anywhere between 2am & 4am, it drives me insane I'm always tired because of the bloody cat. However I forgive her because I'm her slave and I stupidly adore the fluffy monster. Hmm

icedcoffees · 03/09/2021 23:17

Nope - our cats have always been banned from the bedroom overnight.

They have the run of downstairs and access to scratching posts, food, water, litter trays and a comfy sofa and blankets.

We don't hear a peep from any of them.

sheeplikessleep · 03/09/2021 23:23

Thanks all for posting. I’m falling asleep on the settee but will read through them all in the morning for inspiration. However from a quick look through, there doesn’t seem much hope of a nights sleep 😴

tiredanddangerous · 03/09/2021 23:27

No. Ours are banned from the bedroom. We close the door and they have the run of the rest of the house. We used to get woken up by 4am zoomies when they were younger but not a peep out of them now.

Feenie · 03/09/2021 23:29

One of ours is like this at half 5 - have probably made a rod for my own back as I get up and let her out. She walks up and down is mewing and purring until I do. Then the other one wants a cuddle. Neither of them are remotely cuddly the rest of the time so it’s both a curse and a blessing!

Her other speciality is lapping at my glass of water and sticking her paw in it. It’s very cute. She obviously has lots of water elsewhere but is making a point 😆

Feenie · 03/09/2021 23:30

*us

Indigokitten · 03/09/2021 23:34

Nooooo. She has the run of the lounge, dining room, kitchen and conservatory. No way is she allowed upstairs at night .

Larryyourwaiter · 03/09/2021 23:44

Mine gets spring fever so we have weeks of being woken up at 4.30am (if I can manage I just get out of bed and throw him out, I don’t feed him, usually he gets the message after a few days).
He will also wake DD randomly to say hello. At the moment he’s fallen into lazy winter sleeping so he will sleep through until the alarm or 8.30am. Love this time of year.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 04/09/2021 00:09

Anywhere from 3am onwards for his breakfast. Then a few hours later for his second breakfast. If I'm not working he will usually settle after a fuss and go back to sleep again but the days I'm out at 7am for work I'll feed him again just before I go out. This morning though he decided he didn't like his not usual brand of Cat food and turned his nose up at it. He even ate his biscuits which he will only eat under duress of no wet food left. I ended up having to get back out of bed, throw some pjs on a s go out to my car at 4:30 this morning to get his actual Cat food out. He had that, then fast asleep happy as Larry. Me on the other hand I felt like a zombie all day at work today. Felix doesn't just miaow to wake me up either. He sits on my pillow or at the side of me and then proceeds to stab me with his sharp claws. Or this one this morning was chomping my fingers as I was trying to fall back asleep a while longer

Dancingsmile · 04/09/2021 06:42

One of my cat's is more active at night so we have to let her out the other is quiet but will poo at night and chooses anywhere but his litter tray for it so he's out as well.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/09/2021 07:27

@tableNiner
Have you tried trying to tire them out with games before bed?

We tried this but the cat lost his temper at landing on Park Lane with hotels on, and pushed everything off the Monopoly board.

We going to buy him the Mouse Trap game for Christmas and see if he likes that.
