Litter tray problem

Hi
We recently got 2 kittens from a rescue and they have been using the litter tray.
However when they are “covering their business “ they tend to end up with a lot of the litter on the floor around the tray. Could our litter tray be too shallow?

That's a hazard of litter trays Grin Some cats are very enthusiastic about covering up, others not so much. Is it a covered tray? If the tray is in an out of the way place, could you put some newspaper down?

Thank you. It’s not covered just wasn’t sure if we were doing something wrong! First time having kittens.

I got a high sided tray for my 2

Nothing wrong, they do love to flick it around like my 2 lol u can try and get one of those non slip mats that is big enough so when the cat steps out they can wipe there feet sometimes its excess litter that they flick off from there paws x

If they’re still very young stick with the shallow sided tray and get a litter mat where the litter sort of falls in.
You can move to a higher sided tray but I wouldn’t rush this, 6 months would be a good age/ once they’ve recovered from neutering.

Can you get one with a lip? It helps with enthusiastic cats

What do these so-called kittens look like, then? Asking for a friendWink

Ha ha! One of our younger cats was enthusiastically covering her pee, older cat waiting to use the same tray got a face full of cat litter. She was not a happy cat…. She smacked the younger one soundly in the face, as if saying don’t you ever dare do that again!
Try a covered litter tray without the door, plus a litter saver mat. I find the heavier, larger particle type litters don’t travel quite so far.
(We do have two trays!)

You probably need two trays. They are covering up scents and competing if you know what I mean. Although cats generally get envy so they will probably alternate between the two! 😂

Bargebill19 · 07/09/2021 19:44

Oh yep they do that! 🤣

I can't possibly comment without a picture.

Yeah, it's totally normal. I have moved to 'cats best' litter, on the advice of this group. It really is great - much better than the cheap as chips grey stuff I was using before - but ohhh my does it spread.

I'm using a covered tray, door off, which seems to be working. They've had it since 4 months old without issue. They're also sharing, again without issue, although I wonder if, as they get older, they'll need a tray each so they can both ignore one and favour the other.

Think yourself lucky! One if my cats doesn't cover it at all, he prefers to let it stench the house out! Fortunately he mostly goes outside these days.
