Grooming an elderly cat

My girl is 16 and can't groom herself very well these days. She will tolerate me brushing her a bit but then gets growly and hissy. She's quite matted in places and although I have managed to hand pick out some of the mats (and cut out the worst! 😟) I need to be able to brush her more efficiently and regularly so that she's not uncomfortable. She's just a rescue moggie so no special fur issues. I just got a particularly bad matted spot and now she's sitting with her back to me swishing her tail. 😂
Can anyone recommend a good brush that will help get the underlying fur which seems to be what is causing the issues?
I have included the obligatory photo 😊

Ah, bless her. Do you think she'd tolerate one of those grooming gloves, so you can at least give her a daily brush under the guise of petting her?

I use a Mars coatking on both my dog and cat, my groomer recommended this to me and it's been excellent. It gently removes mats

Mine 14 and getting knotty. I'm going to chop most of her fur off from the areas where she gets matted to try and prevent it. It's mostly between her front legs.
