How can I stop kitten climbing up my furniture?!

My kitten is 4.5 months old and is driving me insane by climbing up my furniture, namely my dining table. I've already had to repaint the the whole table as she keeps climbing up the legs and it's chalk paint, that scratches quite easily.
I only finished repainting the table yesterday, I have a fire guard around it but she has managed to infiltrate and climb up up leg...scratching the whole leg again 😭😭 how do I stop her doing it?!

You can't. That's what cats do!

daisypond · 27/08/2021 09:27

Yes, you can’t. When she gets bigger she’ll be able to jump up instead of climb.

Doveyouknow · 27/08/2021 09:32

You can't really unless you stop her accessing the room altogether. She will probably grow out of it though...

kikipie · 27/08/2021 09:34

Welcome to kitten ownership. You’ll be doing well if this is the worst that happens 😄

Mumdiva99 · 27/08/2021 09:44

Ha ha ha 😂. Love the fact you are a few months in and think you can stop your cats doing things.....

Seriously though....do you have alternative things to climb? A 6ft cat tree for example? Your kitten is learning natural cat behaviour...they need to learn in the house so they are safe when you let them out. Belive me when they are 20ft up the tree you want to be sure they know how to get down. (There are still many times I have been on top of the step ladder coaxing the cat down from the tree slowly!!)

My cats preferred climbing my curtains...so it could be worse....

bamboocat · 27/08/2021 09:45

You need a cat tower.

And I wouldn't bother repainting it again until she's reached the layabout furry cushion stage.

Caaarrrl · 27/08/2021 09:50

I have a cat tower. Our 15 wk old kittens prefer the curtains though! Or the backs of the sofas. They will grow out of it OP. None of my adult cats do things like this anymore.

porites · 27/08/2021 09:56

You could short-term wrap the legs in bubble wrap and duct tape.

Cissyandflora · 27/08/2021 09:58

Enjoy your kitten and stop painting the table!

Sorry- didn’t mean that to sound like a criticism and I think it did. I know some people try to get their cats from climbing on things but I don’t think you can. You can try a cat tree but I still think kitten will scratch and climb where they like. I love kittens so much!
Ishotthesherrif · 27/08/2021 10:17

She loves the curtains too 😂😂 she has a cat tower, which she does climb, but prefers the table legs 🙄 the fire guard is just goading her, it's almost like she's seen it as a challenge.
She has a vet appointment in 2 weeks to get spayed, then she can play outside!

Wrap them loosely in tinfoil. I covered my couch in it and it kept him off. I ended up getting a large throw to cover it as it was new but at least now he just jumps up and goes to sleep on it as opposed to trying to rip it to shreds.

Notaroadrunner · 27/08/2021 10:25

Also have a spray bottle of water handy and spray it as soon as kitten does something you don't want them to. It might help deter her. Our vet won't neuter til 6 months so another month to go - cannot wait!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 27/08/2021 10:29

"You could short-term wrap the legs in bubble wrap and duct tape."

Bit cruel 😳

Regularsizedrudy · 27/08/2021 10:51

Oh no, a cat doing cat things

Heronatemygoldfish · 27/08/2021 11:34

Go to your local carpet shop. They usually have a bin of offcuts. Get some bits and then wrap them backing-side-out on the table legs. Fasten with duct tape. That will protect your table legs and give the kitten something to get claws into.

Also get some table insulating fabric (useful anyway) and tie on; that will stop scratches on top too.

I would be very wary of letting a kitten that young go out unsupervised, in all honesty. At five ish months old she will be tiny and very inexperienced. Is your garden cat proofed and safe for her to explore?

Why do people have to be snippy 🙄 surely it's reasonable to want to protect belongings that have cost money that you have worked hard to be able to afford?

We live rural, she won't be going out unsupervised for a while, but she's showing a very keen interest in the garden and we didn't want a house cat.

Our cats were desperate to go out at 4 months.....by 5 we let them in the garden a little. Spayed at 6 months. Outside a few weeks later. (We did used to call them in every 20/30 minutes or so at first.) They love the outside. They are happiest when we are in the garden with them.
