Dreamies making my cat sick?

happyface42 · 26/08/2021 21:39

Has anyone else found that their cat is sick after having dreamies?
My cat is currently under investigation with vets so to why she vomits almost daily and it's suddenly just dawned on me... could it be the dreamies?!

I’ve never given my cat any as when I adopted him he came with a letter from his old owner saying “dreamies make me sick!” So maybe it is a thing!

Preg19 · 26/08/2021 21:43

Yes quite possibly. You would ideally want to look at your cats overall diet as it is quite possibly that. I got a rescue cat who had gastrointestinal problems and was sick, the best diet I found for her was raw. If I was ever to feed her dry it was a cereal and rice free hypoallergenic food

Fleurty · 26/08/2021 21:47

I have a cat with a sensitive stomach and she is sick after dreamies. Took is a while to realise it was them too. She has always been quite sicky, had lots of tests done when she was young but eventually we found a food regime that works for her.

Wolfiefan · 26/08/2021 21:48

Never had a problem. But we did have an elderly cat who couldn’t have them (or any dried food) due to lack of teeth/swallowing not chewing!

Moonface123 · 26/08/2021 21:51

These definitely do not suit my cat, and l have heard many others say the same.

Does your cat eat Felix / Purina wet food?
There is a possible link with these 2 makes and cats' illnesses (and even sadly deaths).
There is a growing Facebook group called catsaffectedbyfelix - have a look.

Now it may be a coincidence and I am usually v v allergic to Facebook conspiracy theories but....

My cat was ill - ended up at the vets - I changed her food and now she is much more active (as she should be as she is only 1)

purpleme12 · 26/08/2021 21:56

My cats can only have about 2 at a time
Any more does make them sick
Although I do think that it's something to do with food they don't have often. If I give them a lot of wet food in one go (they don't normally have wet food) that's also something that might make them sick

Dreamies make my cat sick.. I can give her a couple max.. shame as she adores them

derekthe1adyhamster · 26/08/2021 21:59

Yep. Makes my cat sick too

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 26/08/2021 22:00

Few at a time = happy kitty
6 or more = vomit on the floor

NotMyCat · 26/08/2021 22:08

Not dreamies but mine is sick from anything beef flavoured
Literally 0.00001% beef flavouring equals vomit

Want2beme · 26/08/2021 22:14

Yep, Dreamies with cheese made my cat puke every time. I don't give them to her anymore. No problem with the other flavours.

Yes she is on good as it looks and then I changed her over to purina to see if it made a difference and it didn't!! I will definitely take a look at that thank you. What food is your cat on now?

Thanks everyone for your comments definitely going to cut out dreamies and see if that makes a difference! She has lost a lot of weight and is only 5 Sad otherwise in good spirits and never off her food!

Yes. My cat is very sensitive and is always sick after dreemies. I think she's got some sort of intolerance to grain or cereal. She couldn't tolerate Royal
Canin at all.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/08/2021 23:09

I changed her to Iams vitality and her vomiting improved massively.

Obviously a pet food brand who make their own treats are far from an unbiased source, but their analysis of why Dreamies can cause issues is still sound; & being allergic to Dreamies is apparently common enough that Wag! have a dedicated information page on it.

Cats who bring their food back up right after eating might need elevated-angled bowls (cannot for life of me think of proper name) - not sure if that could apply with treats given much lower volume involved, but if they were being golloped in the wrong position, maybe?

If you want/need (eg as bribery to come in overnight?) to keep giving treats you can get ones that are just wee freeze-dried bits of eg chicken/salmon/tuna/white fish, so as long as cats are ok with the protein in question you’re all set.

It seems much easier to get grain-free food now than it was, say, 5-7 years ago (my cats were 9 in April), too: plenty of opportunities to try things, & it’s becoming ever-more affordable too. (Good thing it’s so much easier/there’s more available given the seemingly-endless shortages on ZooPlus…)

Blueberry40 · 27/08/2021 06:46

Yes! Our cat is always predictably sick after eating dreamies- I think it’s because he loves them so much that he eats them very quickly without chewing properly (he doesn’t have many teeth left to chew with) and it’s a shock to his stomach. I’ve stopped giving him dreamies now for this reason and he very rarely vomits these days.

Preg19 · 27/08/2021 07:19

Purina is a brand name and makes all felix. I would steer clear of purina food altogether and if your cat is only on wet food try one with a higher meat content. Its always good to compare the ingredients of food. Felix has meat and animal derivatives and various sugars ect not much goodvess
