Is anyone still buying food from any of the recalled brands?

I assumed it would have been an utter and complete PR disaster- but I still see shelves stocked high with Applaws, AVA etc. Most notably in Pets@Home. I've popped in quite a few times (new kitten owner so constantly find new things to spoil her with Grin). So at various times the food stock has depleted and the shelves have actually been restocked. Not just the old stuff sitting there...

I realise it was just one unfortunate batch but the consumer mind doesnt work like that, does it? Once tainted...etc etc

This sad incident played out before my kitten joined us and she was not on any of these food brands anyway. But even I shudder involuntarily when I walk past these shelves.

Yes there is a Food Standards Agency ongoing investigation but until they publish their findings, I would have thought all food from these brands would have been stopped as a safety measure. At least temporarily.

Sorry this post is not meant to be insensitive to any cat parents who have lost their beloved pets. Just something playing on my mind

Tbh I would buy dry Applaws if I could find it, as my cats have turned their nose up at every other dry I've tried. I usually feed a mix of wet Thrive and dry Applaws. I checked at Pets at Home and they weren't selling it? Or do you mean the brand as a whole?

I did have a massive bag of the contaminated batch and threw it out. I thought new batches might be available by now. I've been feeding Applaws for 9 years so this incident isnt enough to stop me buying it. I am interested in using the new insect- based cat foods, but my cats have thus far refused the one I tried.

I did have a look in Sainsburys yesterday to see if their hypoallergenic food had been restocked, but there was none there. I wonder if they may just drop that line entirely? Obviously it's safety first, but I did like being able to buy what I thought was a reasonable dry food in my online grocery shop, rather than remembering to call into Pets at Home like I need to now.

Yes @RogersVideo I've seen loads of Applaws (wet food admittedly) and full shelves of AVA (didnt register if it was wet or dry).

It's a shame though; even so-called "good" brands get caught out on quality control. With such tragic and sad results.

Insect-based food you say? Very intriguing. Can you send a link please?

Oh and there is a podcast on Guardian if anyone is interested. I mean nothing new was discussed but still worth a listen

One cat owner broke down when talking about his pet Sad

This is the insect food I tried: LoveBug

I have seen ads for other brands too but can't remember their names.

Yugi · 25/08/2021 08:51

I use the wet Applaws food. My cats love it

Oldraver · 25/08/2021 11:54

I was in Pets at Home on Monday and didn't see any Applaws but sure there was AVA. I was too busy looking for one they said they stocked but couldn't find

I'm not sure if I could buy Applaws again ( I skipped the wet food even though I know it isn't an issue). I know this could really of happened with any brands but my mind just won't let me buy it. It's been quite an emotive thing tying to decide on the right food for the kittens

I'm surprised the brands haven't reappeared after using a different factory, Applaws I believe had in been made there for a short while so not sure why they haven't gone back to the old factory. It must be devastating for the business anyway

Applaws wet is made in Thailand so completely unaffected by the Fold Hill issues. I too saw lots of Ava dry in Pets at Home, I assume they changed supplier?

Amrapaali · 27/08/2021 09:49

My kitten is on Untamed and Hi life. Untamed is made in Thailand as well. So is the Seriously Good range. What is the secret with Thailand I wonder? Grin

Agree with @Oldraver it is quite an emotional issue

Is it Hi-Life wet they have ? I bought this for my two and they love it but would be quite expensive to have the recommended 3 pouches a day for the two of them
Amrapaali · 28/08/2021 14:08

Yes @Oldraver she has the wet from Hi life. But she only has 1 to 1.5 pouches a day. Agree pennies can quickly add up in a multi cat household

Messrs Balanchine & Nijinsky have the Applaws chicken & pumpkin wet food for their tea on Fridays because pumpkin is good for the feline GI tract & [atm] I’m able to get Applaws more easily than the Almo foods with pumpkin in.

No Applaws dry here for aeons & I don’t think I’d feel able to buy it again even with a safety guarantee. (Plus them doing the required renal [+ senior] food[s] & the necessary special offer[s] to make it affordable.) Am very lucky that my Mog Squad have remained pretty unfussy about food - cats having a strop over changing food must just add to stress of things for owners.
