Rescue cat so sad and lethargic

Our poor rescue who we absolutely adore isn't himself. After his vaccinations in week 2 he was a bit sick with diarrhoea. After that he was ok for a week but in the last 2 weeks he's been on and off with vomit and diarrhoea. I spoke to the vet and they think it might be due to his second vaccinations. This week I read that some cats are reacting badly to Felix agail so since yesterday I've changed all his food wet and dry. Since then his tummy has settled, but he still seems so sad and tired. Today he's been lying down or Sat still for most of the day. He's not been coming over for his head bumps. However he is eating drinking and pooing/weeing ok.

Maybe he's still unsettled as he's only been here about 6 weeks and he's been poorly for some of that. Or maybe having diarrhoea has wiped him out. Is there anything I can do to cheer him up? He's about 4, should he be this inactive? Thanks!

Sometimes cats just have a big sleeping phase. Particularly rescue cats as they settle in and overcome the trauma of their past experiences - they need downtime. If he’s eating, cleaning himself, isn’t shying away from you and will give you a purr, I wouldn’t worry too much for a day or two.

Thank you. Dh said the same, that if he's eating and drinking and coming for the occasional stroke he's fine and just resting. I might give it a few weeks and if he's still this tired I'll ring the vet again.

I mean, generally with cats if they’re ignoring you and sleeping 80% of the time but also eating all their food and shredding any armchairs you particularly don’t want them to shred, then all is fine …

Ahh! He has been at my best sofas AND my expensive new rattan garden furniture today so maybe you're right and I'm just being dramatic.

Sounds like he’s enjoying himself!

Hmm, 6 weeks and a medical condition sounds just about right for him to have worked out that you are proper slaves who will do his every bidding. So no more need to ingratiate himself by being affectionate all the time! Grin Wink

Cats are generally very lazy.

My 6yo sleeps for probably 22 hours a day, lol. The younger two are a bit more active but they definitely sleep and lie around a LOT.

It took my cat 5/6 days to recover from the new Felix AGAIL. Maybe he's just getting over the upset tummy.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 21/08/2021 13:57

I'd say it was about week after stopping the AGAIL altogether that our girl started to perk up. Have you tried a bit of gentle play with him, even just pulling a bit of string for him to chase or a toy on a dangly wand?

I can't believe how many cats have been affected by Felix. It was recommended by the rescue when we brought him home. He's already looking so much better, more alert, no weepy eyes or dull fur constantly shedding. It's only day 3 off Felix but I'm 100% sure it was not doing him any good. I've also taken him off purina dry food as I heard they also make the felix.

He seems more settled although we've now spent 3 days trying to get him to use the very expensive cat flap we bought him. He's refusing to use it and insisting on us opening and closing doors for him whenever he wants to look out to see if it's still raining.

Of course! Your job is to stand and open the door whenever he wants. Glad he is perking up.
