Hi,

I'm at my wits end and need advice. I have had my cat Leo for 3 years. No problems whatsoever but the past month he keeps peeing on my rugs! His litter tray is always clean so I don't understand. It's making my house stink! I'm constantly hand washing the rugs and then as soon as I put it down he will go on it. What can I do?? Will he stop?

I have the same issue but on the carpet in Dc bedroom and on lino in utility room. Im getting v.upset about it all the time

It’s hard to fully get the smell out and that will attract them back. Need to use biological powder and an enzyme spray.
Also have him checked for a UTI. And provide another litter box in a different location if possible.
But I’d put those rugs right out of the way for now. Carpet is trickier.

I had a similar issue. With my cat I’m sure it was stress related as a neighbour has recently moved and taken their bully of a cat with them. And mine has been absolutely fine since then.

I’m the meantime things I did - removed the rug. Even with thorough cleaning she could clearly still smell her scent on it. Used cystitis medicine and pro-biotics in her food to make sure she’s not having any pain peeing and pooing.

Used Dreamies to treat her when she came into the bedroom where the rug used to be. Associating a place with treats, tickles and feeding makes them less likely to pee there. Locking them out doesn’t help as they will re-mark it as soon as they get in (which with the best will in the world, they will!)

And maybe some feliway or anti anxiety meds if your cat seems stressed.

It's weird because he won't do it on my living room or kitchen rug he will only going on the hallway and bathroom rug. Im going to contact my vet and just get him checked. I live in quite a small property and it's one floor so he has constant easy access to the litter tray. He doesn't seem stressed or anything but who knows. Today he literally went pee on the hallway rug whilst I was standing there! It's very frustrating. Im going to clean the rug and put it away forms couple weeks until we can hopefully sort the issue.

you can try laying a sheet of silver foil over those places for a few days, and see if that discourages him enough to divert back to his litter tray.

Also, have you changed the litter? maybe there is a litter he prefers?

SparklingLime · 19/08/2021 22:10

There’s some good tips in here, even for those long litter-trained: www.wikihow.pet/Litter-Train-a-Cat

@54321nought
We haven't changed the litter. It's cleaned regularly. He never poos on the rug just pees on it. At first it started he was doing it at night but now it's a constant thing.

The obvious thing to do for the moment is to remove the rugs he's weeing on. You can't have him using your house as a giant litter tray so removing where he is making a beeline for could help initially. So I'd get up as many rugs as you can

Confine him to smaller spaces too for the moment. So make upstairs off bounds for example - you need to cut down the places he has to do this

Feliway worth a try and a vet check too

BridgetInHerBravery · 19/08/2021 23:04

Does he go outside?

What does he eat?

I would start by lifting the rugs, maybe putting a puppy pad or 2 down for just in case, and adding another litter tray. Put a different litter in it in case he has a preference.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/08/2021 09:33

Are you using wood pellet litter? It can be rough on paws & then they don’t want to use it but if he’s doing it in front of you it could likely be infection and he’s trying to tell you he’s in pain.

They don’t hideaway with urine infections or refuse food.

JonahofArk · 20/08/2021 09:38

Have you taken him to the vet? I'd get him checked out first to rule out an infection, as peeing in random places can be a sign of health issues.
