New rescue still hiding a week on...

The rehoming centre said it took her a week to settle in there, she was there about 3weeks? So she's had a LOT of changes this past month, poor little lady 😢

I plugged in a feliway last night (fingers X'd it'll help soothe her anxiety) and develop some brave pants

It's just her and me in the house, although she is shut in one room currently (spare - now the cat! - bedroom)

I try and spend time in there reading, last night I watched tv on the laptop, just so she can get used to me. Am not a great chatterbox, but talk to her about what I'm doing..

She comes out at night to eat/use litter tray ... I know it will take time, I'm just sad that's she's still stressed 😢

Mine hid under the sofa for a fortnight. She will come out eventually. The challenge is not to get over excited when she creeps out and scare her. I just turned round one day and she was on the sofa not under it.

JoanOgden · 14/08/2021 18:13

Oh, this stage is difficult, but it will be fine. Mine emerged from behind the sofa after a couple of days, but then spent much of her time hiding under my bed for the next week or so. She now runs the house with a rod of iron and spends most of her time on my lap or asleep next to me.

FleasInMyKnees · 14/08/2021 18:17

Do you sit on a blanket on the floor, she might like that and venture out for a sniff. Can you leave her bedroom door open when you're in there and gradually move her food tray. Are kittens allowed dreamies.

Want2beme · 14/08/2021 18:25

She'll venture out in her own good time. She's just learning to trust you. Little by little you'll see changes. Have you got a cat stick toy, (never remember what they're called), that you could gently wave around whilst you're in the room with her? That might entice her out.

OldSpeclkledHen · 14/08/2021 19:44

Thank You everyone, it's so tough, I just need people who understand 😳 I just don't know how long to leave it before I really start panicking 😳😳

She's not a kitten (nearly 3) and she does have dreamies, but only eats them under cover of darkness

The rehoming centre said to keep her confined to the room until she's coming out when I'm there

We do have a wand with mouse on the end and catnip toy... but both are being ignored

@JoanOgden thank you! I want to hear other success stories 😳

I will post pictures .... when she eventually sneaks out 😳😳

Thanks again 🙏

Come on OP you no the rules, where is the picture? 😉 🐈

I think as you live alone and it’s been a week now, I’d open the room door a little so that she can wonder around. I’d also move the litter tray more towards the door and gradually move it out of it.

I’ve never locked any of the kitten/cats I’ve had in one room they’ve had free reign of the house. They did hide behind the sofa for a day or so but soon came out.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2021 20:22

One of mine hid for 8 days. But I'd been pre warned that she would. She completely dominated me and her sister, from the minute she came out!

Allergictoironing · 15/08/2021 09:56

Boycat mostly hid for weeks, and Girlcat came out rarely and only after the first few days (she's the brave one with a brain). Took months before I could touch either of them.

5 years down the line, my life is ruled by having to cuddle and/or stroke them on demand. I've been in the study a whole 15 minutes having given them breakfast only very recently (due to extra cuddles with Boycat on the bed) and I can feel Girlcat's eyes boring through the back of the chair as she wants more attention.

SuperSange · 15/08/2021 12:19

My lovely SIL's cat hid upstairs for a couple of months, only came down after dark to eat. I imaging it's quite normal if they've had a shaky start in life.

Hemskis · 15/08/2021 18:05

One of my two rescue cats took ages and I was posting on here as I was so worried. I think it took about a month before we were allowed to stroke her for more than a minute. It's now been about 4 months and she is super cuddly but only with me and she is still an anxious cat.
I had a lot of luck with bits of chicken and lick a mix that I hand fed her.

claireb7rg · 15/08/2021 19:49

Our newest resident moved in 4 months ago at the age of 8 months and still hides a lot.

She is ex semi feral and has adapted very well but is still very skittish

AmandaHugenkiss · 15/08/2021 21:26

Mine hid for two weeks solid. I gave him the run of the flat, and after about a week I could hear him creep in my room at night, and come up and sniff by my side of the bed. After two weeks he was on the bed checking me out, and in week three he came out from under the sofa while I was watching tv. Had to control myself and pretend I wasn’t even watching!

By week 4 he was coming for a fuss when I sat down, and then he was all over me 😂 Give her time.

OldSpeclkledHen · 16/08/2021 11:47

So last night, was just sat in the room quietly on laptop when ... boom - there was a little black cat 😍😍😍

We made friends, she wanted lots of fusses 😍😍 plenty of rolling around on the floor on her back (little tart!)

Just gutted I didn't have my phone to take pictures 🙄🙄

This morning, back to hiding, but that's ok - she's obviously a vampire cat and only comes out after dark 😂😂 but at least I've seen her and what she looks like 😂😂 feeling much happier today 😁
Will remember phone tonight 😂😂 and will post pics ASAP 😁
Thanks everyone for your kind words 🙂

Great news. Looking forward to the photos.

Mpsister · 16/08/2021 13:28

That sounds really encouraging. Mine hid behind the washing machine for nearly 2 weeks. She's now super confident and totally settled in. Looking forward to seeing the pictures later 😻

Chemenger · 16/08/2021 15:19

I foster and sometimes have major panics that a foster cat has somehow escaped because I can’t find them. They always come out in the end. I see yours has now emerged but I was going to suggest reading aloud, to get her used to your voice.

OldSpeclkledHen · 17/08/2021 12:43

Pics (hopefully!) attached 🙂

She's lovely!

My last recue managed to get under the bath and was there for a week. We only knew she was there from taking pictures with a flash!
