Anyone have a Ragcoon?

Hello all,

After losing our old cuddly attention seeking tabby boy earlier this year, we have been catless for several months. Due to unfortunate circumstances, someone local to my in-laws is having to rehome their cat and we could potentially take her (waiting to hear if the owner’s relatives can take her first).

She’s a Maine Coon x Ragdoll, and all our previous cats have been moggies. Anyone have one of these, or either of the two, that can tell me if there are certain quirks or personality traits we should be aware of? She’s just over 1, so still very young. DP is making dark noises about kittens scratching up our furniture and peeing on our new couch, but I’m willing to risk it 😁

Will of course post pictures if we take her!

I've known some be very chilled and others be neurotic 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’ve got friends with a Ragdoll which is the floppiest soppiest thing walking, which I was hoping was standard!

My neighbours ragdoll was so laidback it lay down for a catnap at the side of the road outside her house and was run over!

Shmithecat2 · 11/08/2021 18:47

I've got a Maine Coon cross, he's pretty chill. I'm not aware of any potential health issues of either breed, so can't comment on how that might present in a cross of both breeds, but with Ragdoll involved, you would need to assess whether it should be an indoor or outdoor cat. Ragdolls don't tend to have the most street sense...

Sad if we do get her, she’ll be staying in until we have assessed her street smarts!!

@Shmithecat2 will do. I would also be a bit concerned about a laid back cat letting itself be picked up and stolen, so we would consider if she needed to be indoor only.

@Wbeezer that's why Ragdolls are supposed to be indoor-only! 😔

I have 2 Ragdolls! Honestly, after having these, I wouldn't go back to any other cat. They are often called 'puppy cats' because they are very much like dogs. Ours greet us at the door, follow us everywhere around the house. We adore them. One of them has a habit of peeing in our bathtub, which is the only negative. However, he did suffer a UTI when he was young, so we think the behaviour of going where he wanted, kind of stuck, rather than being a breed thing! Male cats are more prone to urinary issues, so you may be safer with a female anyway.

RandomMess · 11/08/2021 18:55

We have Somalis and they are very puppy like too!

Oh interesting - my male ragdoll likes to pee everywhere too, but his sister doesn't

Will NOT be showing DP this thread 😂

Even if it’s just male cats being prone to it, the minute he thinks she might wee he’ll start grumbling about the sofa again!!

We have a ragdoll Persian X who is an absolute sweetheart, even has bags of patience with the toddler

Are you ready for lots of grooming?

RandomMess · 11/08/2021 19:14

We have just taken on a 3 year old one, we are exhausted!!!

He is very full of mischief and kitten like still 😳

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 11/08/2021 19:22

I have a ragamuffin she’s a doll, so chilled out her brother was even lovelier. I’m sure she’ll be a lovely cat op

CosilyRosily · 11/08/2021 19:27

We have maine coon x ragdoll crosses and they are lovely cats, one was a real hunter and the other is more of a lazy lap cat. They definitely seem to favour the maine coon side more (although really hate cold weather). Never had issues with them scratching furniture or toileting problems. One likes to steal small objects (hair grips, cable ties, Lindor wrappers) and put them in his food bowl. Think that might be because he's a bit of a weirdo rather than being a breed specific trait

I think so, our last old boy couldn’t groom due to arthritis so I had to do him several times a week to keep on top of knots. I’m braced for that!

I take it grooming is more of a maine coon thing then, as my Raggies never need grooming. We do it every now and then more for bonding/enjoyment for them but they never actually need it. My childhood cat, a Persian, was a nightmare and needed constant grooming!

Yeah mine need much less grooming than I expected. I usually only do the full works (brush, nails clipped, ears cleaned) every 2-3 weeks (or when I notice a knot in their fur, which isn't often).

They do shed like crazy but the robot vacuum helps with that!

Be aware that unless you see papers, there is a huge market in very dubiously bred kittens if both those breeds which end up nothing like the "breed standard" and may also have other problems - we have a rescue "ragdoll" and she is clearly either very poorly bred or a crossbreed as she is half the size she is supposed to be, very neurotic etc. She was also very clearly removed from her mother/siblings far too early and missed out on some vital info on how to cat and interact properly, it is actually quite sad to see her now as a confused adult.

Yeah, crossbreeds aren't regulated and are likely to be several generations away from registered pure breeds.

Yes this is a good point. We would take her even if she wasn’t a “breed cross” as I love all my cats regardless of moggie heritage, but a heightened awareness of any potential issues with her breeding history (if it’s true!) is what I’m trying to be clued up about. Thank you.

We have a rescue who is part Maine Coon (the other parts are BSH and Burmese) and he sheds like nobody's business!

He doesn't get knotty or tangled but the hair that comes off him is ridiculous. Stroke down his back and you bring a clump of hair with your hand, and every morning I find random clumps of his hair wherever he's been sleeping overnight Hmm Grin
