How long did it take you to get used to your cat?

Be gentle please. I am not very happy about all this.
I have never wanted pets. But now I have 3 children, one who was desperate for a cat and two who were terrified of cats and dogs. And a dh who loves cats. So we got 2 kittens, thinking it would be good for eveyone.
We have had them about 6 weeks. Do you think I will get used to them? Only right now I am not enjoying them at all.
I particularly don't like keeping windows and doors shut, I feel trapped and like the house needs air.
Waking up to cat poo smell.
Them being in my face when I try to eat breakfast.
Fleas - they came with them and I feel like I have tried everything, and the extra hoovering and housework is driving me mad.
Will I start to enjoy them? They have been neutered (they are one boy and one girl) but not let out yet. I think if we can get on top of the fleas, and when they can be out it will help.
They are lovely cats, I just don't want them in my house. I know you are all cat lovers and am expecting some harsh replies, but hoping maybe for some support too, or maybe someone who felt the same?

Sorry you are still struggling, it is a life adjustment but adult cats are so easy to look after so you will get there eventually. I have had moments this week of wondering if I have done the wrong thing, only because its taken longer for the dog to adjust to them than I thought it would - but I know it will be worth it in the long run. My house doesn't feel right without cats in it.

My tips: try feeding them raw cat food. It may require some transitioning (please look this up, I never had to do this) but there's no poo smell.
Do you repeat the flea and worm treatment monthly?
I hide my litterboxes in blanket boxes. I pick them up cheap and cut a hole in them. Initially they're left open and once I made sure they know where to go, the lid is kept shut. Depending on your litter it prevents tracking (not the wood based clumping stuff, no more of that for me).
I've also found that raw fed cats are less interested in human food but I might have just been lucky.
They'll go on tables.. if not in front of you, when you're not watching. I just wipe my tables with a disinfectant before eating.

I got my two kittens as well at 6 weeks old. I struggled with the stink of shit and not being able to open up doors and windows in the summer. Also had quite a few sleepless nights, I remember one night they were literally bouncing off the walls all night, I mean alllll night. I remember thinking to myself what have I done? I can't go back to sleepless nights!

It got soooo much better once they got outside. I can't remember exact age...maybe 6 months? It was a week or two after they were neutered and now they are just fab. They are in a routine, they come in and out the cat flap as they please, they are snuggly and they let me sleep most importantly. Just love them to bits, well worth it. Yours will be the same.

Oh thank you for responding. You are all so kind not to judge. I do really like the cats, it is just the responsibility I am struggling with. The kids love them though so it is worth it.

I got a pair of brother and sister kittens last year and they were riddled with fleas! I was worried about chemicals as they were so young, so I flea combed them thoroughly to physically remove any eggs. I did this about 3 times and they were completely clear.

floppybit · 02/09/2021 22:15

Did it in kitchen sink with a bowl of very hot water nearby to dip the comb in between passes. Hot water kills the fleas and eggs. You can see them on the comb and so satisfying. My mothers old school method but it works. Sorry if you've already tried this

Are you washing everything on a hot wash? Vacuuming really needs to be daily (if not multiple times a day) if you have fleas too. It's a right pain.

What treatments are the vets prescribing? Some fleas don't respond to some treatments unfortunately Sad
