Pet insurance renewal increases comparison

Hi there!

I have a question to those of you who have claimed on your insurance or your pet got into their senior years on your insurance.

I fully expect increases, but I am looking for a company that is within reason.

At the moment I am aware the Petplan is supposed to be very good in this area their rates are high to start but they do not have large increases as your policy goes on.

Can any of you say the same for any other insurers in your experience?

Thank you.

I'm with Tesco. They've not been to bad so far. I've had £22k of claims. My cat is 11 this year and they told me her premium would double. As it's likely to be £250 a month, I'm going to have to uninsure her.

Oh no what happened to your kitty!

Pet insurance premiums go up like mad every year. The problem with moving around (like you typically do with car insurance) is that a new provider won't cover anything if they consider it to have been identified before their policy started (even if you hadn't claimed for it), so you have to be super-careful.

I'm with Tesco, and the premium goes up massively each year. I can usually get them to reduce it a bit, but it's still very expensive. If this one lives as long as the last one, the premiums will be eye watering!

@Ladywarrior777
We've have
Pancreatitis that nearly finished one of them off.
Then her sister kept getting her mouth stuck open. About five times. She then had surgery to to remove part of her cheek bone to stop it happening.
Then she was diagnosed with severe heart disease. Requiring a lot of medication and multiple trips to the cardiologist.
Her sister also has it. But mildly and is only monitored. Then she had a punch up with another cat and punctured her eyeball.

Yes, so while there is comparison websites for initial cost, and reviews on payouts, there isn't anything on renewal comparisons. Missing a trick here!

I’ve been with pet plan for my 2 cats for a decade. It’s increased to £70 a month for the pair now but I’ve never had to quibble with them paying out. We’ve had broken legs, abscesses and boy cat has an ongoing urinary infection issue. The other one I will consider when insuring new pup is bought by many, which I have been recommended.

Always had our cats insured until the last year. Brother and sister who are 16. Her premiums went up to £35 a month. His went up to over £300 a month… we just pay his medication bill monthly ourselves now. It’s a lot cheaper. He is diabetic and we know he can’t go back under general as the last two times he’s stopped breathing despite his pre op screenings being very positive. They can’t even successfully do a curve as he becomes so panicked that he takes unwell. He’s as cool as a cucumber at home though!

I'm with petplan, covered for life. Started at £20 a month for my pair, is now £46 a month seven years later. They've been excellent when I've needed them and they usually increase both by a small amount, regardless of which cat has claimed more - don't know if this is because they're a joint policy.

I would as a pp said be very careful of moving as nothing pre-existing is covered. As my two between them have dental issues and IBD, even before anything accidental I'm not moving them over!

My two have lifetime insurance with Bought By Many, taken out last year with no preexisting conditions at the time. Last year one developed a heart murmur and had over £300 of scans and investigations. The premium for the pair went up by £3 this year.
