Furminator

Does anyone use a Furminator for their cats and, if so, is it any good? Harry needs a bit of help on the grooming front (he strongly disagrees!) and I was wondering if this would help. If so, which one do I need? He's technically a short hair but has a very thick undercoat - my Mum used to call him a semi - so I didn't know if he might need one for long haired cats.

We bought another version of a Furminator for short haired cats a few weeks ago and it gets nowhere near his undercoat.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I ise one for my dogs and it is great.

I also use it on the rug to get the hair up.

Get a slicker or a metal comb. Cheddar loves a zoomgroom. Furminators wont deal with the undercoat.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/08/2021 13:47

Or a tangle teaser.

My cat hates the furminator, she got very distressed when I used it on her and I read somewhere that it’s actually damaging and painful for them. I now use a soft hair brush from the pet shop and she actually loves being brushed now and purrs whilst before she would try to escape or become agressive.

Asbo loved the furminator but Puddy bear is a longhair and does not approve.

My short haired cat doesn't really like the furminator. He does like my dog's slicker brush though.

I think it is the marmite of the cat brush world, one of them loves it (the one who sheds fifty hairs with every step), the other one (the one which tends to get matts) hates it.

Thanks everyone.

We’ve got a zoom groom for him but it doesn’t do anything for his undercoat or his trousers. He loves it though! I’ve got a metal brush for him but even that doesn’t seem to be getting through! I could try a tangle teaser - I use one but I think I’ll buy him his own!

We had to have him groomed at the vet last time and don’t want to have to do that again!

Here he is after a shrimp snack!

Well two actually - he was helping DH with the measurements for the new patio in the first one!

We use a furminator on a pair of Norwegian Forest Cats and an old Ragdoll with no issues. It does get into the undercoat well and the raggie is terrible at grooming himself. They all tolerate it but I find it best to only donit when they are in the right mood for it. Usually in the evening when they are chilled out.

Hemskis · 03/08/2021 20:10

My long haired cat loved a rake style brush. They look a bit brutal but Ruby loved it and it did a great job on her undercoat.

Mpsister · 03/08/2021 20:36

My cat hates the furminator. I use a tangle teaser intended for humans.

AnnaMagnani · 03/08/2021 20:39

Silky cat and Old Lady cat love (loved) the Furminator.

It gave Old Lady Cat extra life when she was unable to groom herself as it got all the undercoat out and stopped the mats.

Silky cat loves it so much we have to ration it as she gets overexcited and starts chewing it and us.

Desert cat on the other hand has no undercoat and barely needs a wipe with a cloth.

Thanks everyone. I tried my tangle teaser on Harry earlier and he didn't seem bothered by it so I might get him his own - I love him dearly but I'm not sharing my hairbrush with him! I also like the look of the rake comb - I'll be able to open a grooming parlour at this rate!

He is gorgeous. Do make sure that you post a photo when he is fully groomed and looking his most handsome best! Tell him that Misses Snorg and Cheddar have asked for paw-printed photos of their beau at his very best. :)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/08/2021 09:51

I will do. He generally looks pretty good but his favourite sleeping place at the moment is under the BBQ. As there is literally a cat sized space it does mean he sometimes looks a bit untidy and dusty!

We use a furminator on our BSH as otherwise he tends to get quite shaggy around the neck. I wouldn’t say he’s crazy about it, but if you get him when he’s relaxed he’ll generally tolerate about 5 minutes of it before it gets batted away. Find it more effective than the soft large toothed rubber brushes we use for general brushing.
