How do you feed cat if you've got a dog?

Have been feeding him on table but then can't use the table. Has anyone got a microchip feeder and if so is it any good? The dog is well behaved and doesn't dare try to steal from cat, who is the boss of the dog, if I put it on the floor. But the cat is a grazer. Has anyone managed to train their dog?

Windowsill.

Behind a baby gate.

Behind another baby gate to make an airlock.

I have beagles.

As a puppy my dog caught the side of the cat bowl and flung it into the air while running around, when the bowl hit the floor it scared the shit out of him, to this day he is scared of the cat bowl, so I can leave it free and open. Before the scary bowl incident I fed the cat in the utility.

Our microchip feeder is great no problems

AdelindSchade · 25/07/2021 13:05

I think the microchip feeder might be the answer. We've got open plan.

Before the feeder the bowl lived on the kitchen worktop and porch windowsill.

We have the microchip surefeed feeder for our cats and we love them. They now can't steal food from each other. The batteries last for months (the best part of a year) so although they're expensive for what is essentially a fancy bowl, the ongoing cost is minimal. They work as well as they did when we bought them two years ago and the cats got used to eating from them within a few days. There is a training mode you can use so your cat can get used to using it.

Our microchip feeder is great. Much better than I expected! We got one as we had mice and needed to keep the food covered (our elderly cat isn't much of a mouser). They're pricy but worth it.

Mine is upstairs with a babygate with a cat flap in it on the stairs. Never heard of a microchip feeder but having googled it, pretty sure my heathen JRT would destroy it. 🤔

RandomMess · 25/07/2021 13:41

@Willowwarble my JRT has spent many hours trying to work it out Grin she hasn't attacked it though put on the whole she isn't destructive just VERY opportunistic!

Right I've decided to get one thanks all.

On the worktop in the utility room. Previous house (no utility) corner of the worktop in the tiny kitchen away from the food prep areas

Soubriquet · 25/07/2021 14:03

Cat is fed upstairs which is covered by a baby gate

Dogs are fed downstairs

Evenstar · 25/07/2021 14:05

We have a stair gate across the utility room door and the food and litter tray are in there. Three dogs including a very greedy pug, who would eat the lot otherwise.

I feed my cat on the utility worktop to keep the dog away.
However, I've not figured out how to keep the cat away from the dog food haha
