Cat Hit By A Car

On Wednesday morning, my cat was hit by a car, he survived thank god, but has a broken jaw and two missing teeth which were obviously knocked out by the impact. We took him to the vets as soon as he found his way home, and they operated immediately. Has anyone else been in this situation, and if so did your cat make a full recovery? I know it's only a short time since he was injured, but I can't stop worrying that he might be brain damaged or just not be the same cat as he was previously. He's eating little amounts and drinking too, but has been sleeping all day and night. He has a check with the vet this coming Monday and I'm sure they'll answer all my questions but until then, I suppose I'm looking for some reassurance from others who've been in the situation.

So sorry this has happened. Yes, my friends cat made a full recovery from a similar injury, but never wanted to go outside again

SnotsGotTheBoobies · 24/07/2021 22:35

I’m so sorry to hear that your cat was run over. Did the person not stop? That’s so sad, but it’s so great your little man made it.
I haven’t been in the same situation ( when my cat was run over, he was killed)
But it sounds as though your cat was just clipped by the car. I’m sure he will be fine. Please stop worrying. Take each day as it comes. Even if your cat isn’t brain damaged, you may see a difference in his personality going forward, as it’s such a traumatic experience for him.
I hope you are ok, and I wish your cat all the best. Xxx

My cat was hit by a car on 30 October 2020. His jaw was broken and his hip dislocated. His jaw was wired together and his hip joint removed (apparently common op in cats)

He had to endure a feline lockdown until 1 January 2021 and I can still see the line where his fur was shaved but he's fine. Still catting about, living his best life. He's even managed to catch prey.

He can jump up fences and chase his sister. Still loves his cuddles and food.

Hope your moggy heals well and quickly.

I don't know who hit him, he simply showed up as I was leaving for work with blood dripping from his mouth and a very wobbly jaw. On one of the local 'Missing Pets' pages on Facebook, someone had posted they saw a grey and white cat injured at the side of the nearby road and tried to help him, but he scurried off into the hedges. I messaged the chap who'd seen him to ask what time it was he noticed it, and he replied 5.30am - my cat didn't arrive home until 8.30am ....it took him 3 hours to recover sufficiently to cover a distance which would normally have takenhim no more than 5 minutes. I am very hopeful for a full recovery, but heartbroken too seeing his sad little broken furry face.

That’s awful he was in that pain for so long. I’m so sorry. But he’s ok now. And hopefully he will be fine going forward.
SciFiScream’s story I’m sure will give you hope. Even if your boy doesn’t seem like himself for a while, it doesn’t mean the worst. It probably means he’s a little shaken and nervous. I really hope he recovers well and you and your family can relax knowing he’s ok. Xxx

I had a cat who was run over and broke his back leg. He also had to have his hip joint removed. He wasn’t great at jumping after that (still managed to catch and eat a racing pigeon though).

He was run over a second time about 10 years later and didn’t survive. I saw it happen outside our house and ran to pick him up. I then sat on our garden path loving him and crying long after he died. He’s buried in our garden. I planted tulip bulbs above him, so every year when they flower I remember him.

He was the daftest cat I’ve ever known and I still miss him many years later.

One of my childhood cats was hit by a car and broke his jaw when he was about 2. It was wired up and he went on to make a full recovery. He used to dribble a bit when he purred but otherwise he was fine. He lived until age 19.

Fingers crossed for your boy x

bengalcat · 25/07/2021 00:20

Poor little chap . He’ll be ok .

Honeyroar · 25/07/2021 00:32

One of my current cats came in with a bloody jaw and snapped tooth, we think he’d probably hit the tyre of a car and bounced off. He was lucky, he recovered really well with just a few pain killers.

A previous cat used to sleep at the side of our (relatively quiet) lane. He got run over. He broke his pelvis and leg. He had two operations, pins, you name it. Keeping him still (post op) and inside was the hardest part. He did really well and lived many years as a happy, normal cat afterwards.

Fingers crossed for your cat OP. He’s in the right place. And both my cats that were hit stayed well away from cars ever after! My current one runs like crazy if he hears a car coming.

TheCatsBlanket · 25/07/2021 01:02

Thank you to everyone who's commented and made me far more optimistic than I have been over the last couple of days.

@TheCatsBlanket how is your moggy?

SigrunGard · 25/07/2021 19:42

We had a cat that some lovely person kicked in the face, breaking his jaw. It was wired together (and a tooth removed). He went on to live another 15 years and finally PTS because of kidney failure at the ripe old age of 21.

Hope your poor boy recovers quickly

felinelucky · 25/07/2021 19:46

So sorry to hear your poor little guy has had such a bad time of it, OP. Awful thing. Hope he's making good progress.

TheCatsBlanket · 25/07/2021 20:59
@TheCatsBlanket how is your moggy?
He's getting better . . . still sleeping a lot but also eating plenty of his fave Sheba cat food. I noticed him trying to clean his fur today too and also much vigorous bum washing. He's on the mend I would say, which makes me happy and relieved Smile

Is he on metacam? That made my cat sleepy

Hope the arse-hole who kicked your cat went on to have a miserable life.

Lovely to know your puss lived to a grand old age though Smile

Yes he is, and now having googled the side effects, it seems to be fairly common!

I picked this cat up about 2 months ago. His jaw was broken in three places and had been like that for at least a couple of weeks and was severely infected. We don't know if it was a car accident or he was kicked. Anyway, his jaw was fixed together and wired and he had a feeding tube. The tube was removed a few days ago and he now seems absolutely fine.

Oh, poor thing. He looks remarkably like my cat in colour. I didn't know so many cats suffered with broken jaws until now, and that they appear to make good recovery (which I'm happy to know)

Wanted to update you all and say that my cat is on the mend BUT, I need some advice here (sorry it's a bit long)

Took cat last night for his post operative check up, the vet who checked him wasn't the one who did the initial operation. Anyway, the conversation went like this
Vet: Is he eating ok?
Me: Yes, soft pate/mousse type food.
Vet: Ok let's check his mouth and see how he's doing (vet began feeling cats jaw). . . Hmm, I can't find the wire, that's odd let me look under his chin, hmm no wire, I have never known this to happen before where the wire comes out, I've never heard of it ( then he shakes his head and looks at the computer screen to see previous notes) errr So, he is eating?
Me: Yes
Vet: this is most unusual....I will give him a long lasting antibiotic to prevent infection where the wire would have come out under his chin, and I would like you to come back on Friday for another check up.
Me: Errm ok, so this puts paid to him having it in for 4-6 weeks then does it, but how would the wire have come out?
Vet: I don't know, maybe his tongue dislodged it or he pulled it out himself....and yes I suppose it now negates him having it in for 4-6 weeks, but he is eating, right?
Me: Yes

Anyway, I got home and typically went over the conv in my head and with husband, and thought to myself "this makes no sense at all, the cat has been asleep for the last 5 days barring eating a bit of food and having a wee, but he's been so zonked out with medicine he's slept for most of the day and night and how on earth is the vet thinking that in a maximum of 5 days, his bones have fused and all is well

I've been in contact with the vet again today to say that I am not happy to have paid £420 for this operation, and that the only explanation I can think of is that the wire was not fitted correctly and I believe they ought to do the op again at their expense.

The vet did not agree, he is adamant that the cat must have pulled it out (incidentally I cannot find the wire anywhere at all I've even searched through the hoover to see if there, it is not)

My cat has been kept in the kitchen since last Wednesday and in my opinion has not pulled it out...wouldn't I have seen some sort of blood around the area or something ?

With the vet saying he has "never seen a wire being removed in his 10 years since being qualified" my immediate reaction is that it must have been fitted too loosely and has either been ingested or god knows where it is.

So even though the vet said as long as he is eating he's fine, surely 5 days of the wire in place is not ong enough to fuse his jaw? I'm still in conflict with them over this and am going to meet with the clinical lead vet on Friday morning (she is off until then and also the vet who did the surgery is on hols until monday)

Is anyone a vet or know a vet that can advise on this before I go back again?

My main worry is that if they insist on leaving as is, the jaw will not heal correctly and will forever be a weak spot on my cat, and although I love my cat tto death, I don't believe that I should have to pay another £400 + to rectify this.

Sorry it's much longer a post than I wanted it to be!

@TheCatsBlanket that doesn’t sound right, the wires definitely stayed in for my cat until they were removed by the vet.

Bumping for you in the hope that someone more knowledgeable comes along.

@thereinmadnesslies Thanks for the bump, I too hope a vet or veterinary nurse can advise soon - Friday seems too long to wait to discuss with the 'head vet' but she's off until then so I have little choice I suppose

Honeyroar · 27/07/2021 22:04

I think it’s a common thing. You know how cats sometimes sprint across a road in front of cars, I think sometimes they judge the space wrong and actually run into the car and bounce off them face on, if you know what I mean.

musicalfrog · 27/07/2021 22:05

Can you get a second opinion from another vet?
