Cats suddenly hating each other

I really hope someone can give me advice. I have 2 kittens, sisters, 10 months old, usually love each other. Anyway, I got up to feed them as usual this morning and they were hissing, spitting and growling at each other. They are still like that with each other, one is hiding just now.

They normally sleep downstairs together but f they are still hating each other, I don’t know what to do.

Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Are they neutered? Not possible one's been mated so has the Tom's smell on her?

getmeavodka · 23/07/2021 16:30

Have you given them flea medication as one of my cats started doing this when he reacted to flea drops. It happened 2 months in row and stopped when I changed it

They’re both neutered and are house cats so no Tom smell. They both get flea treatment every month and wormed every 3 months. I just went and bought a feliway optimum plug in so hopefully that will help.

It was a full moon last night. One of my three is female and she's been grouchy the last couple of days.

From my previous experience of having two female kittens from the same litter (a long time ago now), they were fine with one another till they reached adulthood and then took a dislike to each other and would not share the same space. One went so far as to leave home and move in with my neighbour up the road. We let the neighbour adopt her in the end.

I have heard that this often happens with feline sisters, not so much with they boys though. They stay pals.

I never realised the moon affects cats, that could explain their behaviour. I really hope it’s just a wee moment. It’s horrible watching them.

My sister has two female indoor cats that are 7/8. They do this randomly from time to time or if one has to go to the vet. It usually settles down quite quickly. I think she largely just encourages them to be around each other and she keeps an eye and it blows over.

I realise that this isn't very helpful now, but when I decided to get a second kitten, I did a bit of research and found that it's a bad idea to get two females as this combo is least likely to get on. A male and a female, or two males, are usually ok, but for some reason things can be a bit tense with two females.

Hopefully, given that they are sisters, they will at least tolerate each other. Just try to make sure that you get two of everything so that they are not competing for resources, and I would also make sure that they have separate feeding areas if things remain tense, as food is most likely to cause issues.

A big fight with hissing and growling is quite unusual I would have thought. We have three unrelated cats and have never had anything more than the odd hiss.

Is there a plan to let them outside eventually or do you want them to be house cats? If so, do they have plenty of space apart from each other so they're not constantly forced into the same room?

Things like separate food and water bowls in different areas of the house, and separate litter trays could help.

Onthegrid · 27/07/2021 18:11

I have 2 sisters they are 4 now, most days they ignore each other, some days they fight and other days they sleep curled up together.

Onthegrid · 27/07/2021 18:14

Mine are not house cats and have plenty of space although they spend more time in the same room than different ones

Just a wee update, the cats are good now thank god. It was horrible seeing them like that. They are house cats (no plans to let them out) but they have the run of the house, plenty of toys, 2 cat trees, 2 litter trays and loads of attention. I have no idea what caused it but I’m glad it’s over !

Great they are fine now. There's a thing called misdirected aggression where if another cat is around and they can't get to it ( I.e. prowling around outside) cats that normally get on can turn on each other, might be worth looking into. My 3 do this when a new cat moved onto neighbourhood last year, vet suggested feluway, scaring away other cats and shared play.
