Visiting cat scaring our cat

We have a neighbouring cat who visits us twice daily, and has done since we've been letting our cat outdoors, about 3 months now. It's territorial, and cats will be cats, but he scares our cat. He's big and intimidating. She's petite. When he comes, she runs and hides. But now he's getting braver. We used to keep her food near the back door but had to move it because he would come in and eat it. But now, if no one is around to see, he comes all the way into the house and into the kitchen to find her food. Today we shut the back door to keep him out (despite the heat) and he came in through the kitchen window. I wouldn't be so bothered if our cat wasn't so scared of him, but he hisses at her until she runs away. Suggestioms on how we manage it please?!

Water pistol to give him a quick squirt when he tries to get in your house. He won't like it and will hopefully get the message.

We had that and ended up getting a microchip cat flap to keep unwanted visitors out. Obviously works better in winter when the doors and windows aren’t open so much. Until then water pistol!

We have a microchip cat flap, but back doors and windows and pretty much open all day at the moment

DH keeps saying he's a friendly cat and doesn't want to be mean to him!

It's not being mean to him though. It's asserting your territory which your cat needs to feel secure. You won't hurt him with a little bit of water. You will put him off coming in.

We need to do something. We left her food unattended this morning. She went outside before eating. By the time she came back half an hour later to eat there was no food left. Wet and dry was all empty! I wish our cat was that unfussy about she eats. She's such a diva about food! We really don't want to leave all windows and doors closed in this heat

My neighbours cats and mine aren't friends.
I love my neighbours cats and in the front garden, I fuss them and we hang out. I chase them out of my back garden.
There's no hard feelings. Cats really don't harbour grudges and are easily appeased if you're mostly kind to them.

Your DH probably won't want to be so welcoming to your visitor when your cat gets stressed and peeing everywhere or leaves home. I agree, squirt the other cat with a water gun.

Bamaluz · 22/07/2021 12:11

We had this, my cat got so stressed that he was overgrooming and his back legs were practically bald.
Don't let it get this bad, your cat is already scared, use a water pistol as recommended here.
We had to resort to a bucket of water in the end, visiting cat was very stubborn .

This was happening to me, but the cat would fight with mine. I sprayed him twice and he hasn’t returned so far. I didn’t want to spray him but it’s my cats home and can’t have another cat coming in, eating his food and fighting with my cat! Imagine if a random person came into your house, started eating your food and then threw a punch
