Meowing all the time

Our boy is ten and never really meows very much but since we got back from a week away on Thursday afternoon he's been meowing a hell of a lot

We don't know why

He was looked after by my best friend (she has three cats) and she came over daily. Maybe he feels a bit left out. Things have never been the same since DD now two years old arrived. He's quite skittish and keeps away from us quite a lot now

He was wormed 4-5 days ago. He's not off his food or water. He's a half British Shorthair, maybe the heat is getting to him. He has quite a think coat

All suggestions welcome. He was outside last night meowing at 3:30am, we thought he couldn't get in but when we let him in via the door instead of the cat flap he just went straight back out

We're at a bit of a loss Sad

Our boy started this a couple of months ago and also started losing weight. He’s hyperthyroid, apparently, and will need eye wateringly expensive treatment so keep an eye on his weight etc.

LadySlipper · 21/07/2021 18:56

My boy was driving us nuts doing that too, and like the previous poster, it was a thyroid issue.

Thank you. I'll Google this as I don't know what it is. Would pet insurance cover it?

You don't have to go with I131. Other options are available!

Bunnyfuller · 21/07/2021 19:32

Our boy is 19 and does this, what’s the alternative to the vet treatment?

powershowerforanhour · 21/07/2021 19:55

I meant for diagnosed hyperthyroidism.
Options apart from I131

  • Stay on Vidalta tablets, or Thyronorm if it won't take tabs, or transdermal methimazole from Summit if won't take oral meds at all.
  • y/d food if cat will eat it
  • Big deep breath and a thyroidectomy if its heart will take it (probably wouldn't do this on a 19yo unless it was a very young 19!l

We’re looking at all the options but he is only 6 so medication for life is a big deal, and special diet isn’t a goer as he lives with his brother and is also a massive hunter. It’s between radiation and operation- both expensive but radiation gives the outside chance that he might develop superpowers… 🤞

Our pet insurance confirmed today that they will cover most of it, thank goodness.

I've been reading up on symptoms etc

He hasn't lost weight, he still has a good appetite. Not drinking quite as much water as usual. His coat is normal looking

We're going to see how he is tonight and tmw and then possibly go to the vet for an opinion

Good luck. Our chap hasn’t lost his appetite-on the contrary his racing metabolism means he’s eating like two pigs but still getting thin.
