The Senior Gentlecat is driving me crazy.
He's almost 20, fit, active, eating, drinking, toileting well, his latest MOT (April) showed no health issues.

Just caught him on the kitchen worktop trying to lick the butter out of the butter dish. Yesterday he decided he was going to steal the Sunday joint out of the slow cooker.
He's not hungry - if I went in the kitchen now and opened the cat food, either wet or dry, he'd amble in in his own time, no shouting and pushing. It's just like he's forgotten how cats are supposed to behave!

It's not a dreadful thing, I'm just slightly bemused as to why my gentle, timid old cat has suddenly turned into a CFer!

Same as people! Some elder people use their age as an excuse to be a dick, looks like cats do to.

My own cat (6yr old) will do no such thing - he's already a dick and showing no signs of amending his cattitude whatsoever.

SalsaLove · 19/07/2021 10:52

Awww he sounds adorable. Do you have a picture of the Gentlecat?

MrsRussell · 19/07/2021 11:00

Ha!
The old sod is currently sitting on a tub of paint chilling. It's the face of outrage on him when you physically pick him up and put him on the floor, as if he has every right to have his head in the fridge...
You have this joy to come then!

And this is him looking as if butter wouldn't melt on his whiskers.

But he does!

If Leroy's behaviour is going to deteriorate it needs to improve a lot bit first. He is seriously the most entitled vicious feline I've ever had. He's also beautiful and fluffy and cute 🥰

I fear it sounds as if he has finally learnt how cats should behave. What a sweetie!

SalsaLove · 19/07/2021 11:21

He’s gorgeous! Grey cats are fabulous, but I do detect a bit of stink eye! 😂

SalsaLove · 19/07/2021 11:22

Leroy is the King!

MrsRussell · 19/07/2021 11:27

Leroy definitely has the Paddington Bear Hard Stare goin' on.
Senior Gentlecat is more like a sort of furry Grand Moff Tarkin off Star Wars - "I think it is time we demonstrated the full power of this furry cuteness. Set your course for Ham Sandwiches."

🤣

😂😂

MrsRussell · 19/07/2021 12:15

Update: for lunch I just had beans - yes, baked beans, tomato sauce - and a piece of granary toast. He was not having it that a cat should not eat beans.
I'm looking at his tomato sauce beard at the moment and thinking things are gonna get messy in the toiletary department here aren't they?

OP posts:
SalsaLove · 19/07/2021 12:34

Oh no! Bless him with his bean beard. 😆

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2021 12:40

Tomato sauce beard! That’s the cat equivalent of “when I am old I shall wear purple”!
Handsome boy. Is he Burmese or British Blue??

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/07/2021 12:43

Is it Ollie who loves beans and baked potatoes?

mineofuselessinformation · 19/07/2021 12:49

My cat got to be a bit of a bugger at around 19 - sodding about at night when I was trying to get him back in, refused to use his lovely and expensive cat bed (because an old cardboard box with a towel in is so much more comfortable, don't you know)! Turned his nose up at food he'd eaten for years.
But, he suddenly learnt how to purr loud enough to hear, and loved being cuddled like a baby.
I miss him.

MrsRussell · 19/07/2021 12:53

@Wolfiefan you've made his day (from the top of the paint tub with his bean beard) - his dad was a blue Persian and his mum was a farm cat!

SIX times I had to put him off. I ended up trying to eat round him. It's just not how well-ordered cats behave! His brother is asleep in the garden under the washing line, that's how good old cats are supposed to be, not stalking the last bean off the plate and nicking ham out of the fridge!

Our Ancient Gentlecat (nice term, I shall steal it) was on hunger strike in her later years until the vet nurse suggested pilchards in tomato sauce.

Plain pilchards were not an acceptable substitute.

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2021 13:33

@MrsRussell he is an extremely handsome overlord!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/07/2021 19:21

Snorg has now learned the Paddington hard stare. It's quite scary! She's also started to be deliberately naughty. Scratching the sofa, while looking me straight in the eye.

SeagullSong · 19/07/2021 20:14

My DCat is still in his prime but definitely applied this principle for a long while after a bout of ill health. 'Yes Mum, I am on the counter stealing food but you must rejoice that I am able to jump up there again and my appetite has returned. '

Snailhaterz · 20/07/2021 07:08

My elderly and late lamented cat was, I think, a little confused for the last 6 months or so of her life . And one of the manifestations was definitely demanding her special breakfast treat of lickety lix three times a morning - as she'd quite clearly forgotten the previous times she'd already had it. Or had she??
