Kitten prefers dp over me

I've had a rough past 2 years. So after a long deliberation me and dp finally agreed getting a kitten was on our radar. I was ecstatic. It was something to look forward to and I was so excited. However from bringing the kitten back he has always favoured my dp. He was meant to be mine. I know you cant choose cats they choose you but I'm so upset. He always purrs when dp pets him. Doesnt for me. He always snuggles up to him, and go up to him for affection. If I try to pet him he will actually have the audacity to walk up to dp for more pets. I don't know what I've done wrong. I've spent an equal amount of time and affection on this kitten. I was the one who decided on him ironically dp wanted a different one. I just feel so disheartened and disconnected from the kitten now. I dont even want to bother with him anymore Sad

Is the kitten male or female? In your post he's a boy, your reply she's a girl?

MumofSpud · 12/07/2021 22:37

Hi, I got a longed for kitten last year and she also prefers my non cat loving DH !
I think it is because she is a girl and she realises he prefers our dog do dies it in purpose - she will sit next to him and rub against him more!
She is using her Wiley feminine charms to turn him into a cat lover Smile

@AlfonsoTheMango

My sympathies, OP.

When I was a child my family adopted a Siamese kitten who was supposed to be mine but the rotten beast adored my mother and never gave me the time of day. Then we adopted an adult Siamese who thought the sun rose and set on my brother and hated me with a passion.

Cats gotta cat, I guess.

Our Siamese boy is 16 months old and besotted with DS1. If he has a choice of laps it is DS1 every time. DS2 is still smarting a year on, even though we prepared him for this. Siamese are just like that. They always have a favourite person. It isn’t about who feeds them either.

I’d say care less. Cats generally prefer less fuss and intensity. If you ease off you may find your kitten takes more of an interest in you.

Our used to prefer DH over me but, strangely, since we had his balls off he’s been all mine! Cats are weird.

Get another kitten. A less fickle better kitten

😄 Kittens do like playmates It's a slippery slope though. Just one more is how it starts.

Lay on the floor a lot with cat biscuits in your hand and slowly feed him when he approaches. Cats like to be above & in control. Slowly close and open your eyes but looking next to the kitten not staring. Make soft repetitive noises. Scratch the back of his neck & chin, find the areas he likes to be scratched.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 12/07/2021 23:50

Perhaps kitten prefers how DH smells?
I'm sure you smell lovely but cats are funny creatures (although very lovable) & have their little quirks & habits.

You need to remember that all animals are sentinent and have their own thoughts and feelings. You can't just make it like you the best! My husband got stroppy when we adopted our dog and she bonded with me the most. I didn't do anything to make her choose me, in fact that may be why she did. I left her alone and only fussed her when she came to me for at least a month. My husband constantly "tried" with her and I think she found it overwhelming and a bit much. I don't mean to be horrible but your reaction sounds like that of a petulant child and you seem rather immature.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 13/07/2021 00:22

My cat is always nicer to anyone but me. I am the one who gets swiped ankles and chewed wrists, she sits next to me and purrs, she will stick her claws out when she's had enough. When I'm having a bad day she avoids me.
I have come to the conclusion that she is like a child. As she has no other outlet I am it. We've learnt together that when she's had enough she puts her paw on my hand.
When my son visits she is all over him like a rash and I'm still the one who gets claws.
Personally I'm glad that I have that because otherwise my life would be empty.
Cats are not robots, if they don't need you you're shit out of luck.

Branleuse · 13/07/2021 17:37

@Beamur exactly, and the more kittens you have, you are statistically more likely to get one that favours you

soddingkitten · 13/07/2021 19:42

So true, but also the reason I’d take no-fucks-given cat over a fawning, people-pleasing dog any day. The affection, when given, is more meaningful.*
