Kittens!

This is really just a follow up from my previous thread. I have kittens!

They’re beautiful, wonderful and amazing. They have settled in beautifully and established an appropriate pecking order with the dogs.

I couldn’t be more delighted.

One of our cats is a ‘kitten’s kitten’, born to a very young mum of around 6-8 months. She wasn’t a great parent by all accounts.

But the last time I was physically in our local cat rescue talking to staff, they had a 4/5-month heavily pregnant feral kitten in their care, which is even worse. Don’t risk it for your little hoodlums!

Oldraver · 10/07/2021 11:58

Beautiful kittens

Motorina · 10/07/2021 16:05

@GuppytheCat definitely not risking it. Will duct tape their legs together if they start getting randy before they’re done 😂🤣

Okay kitten behaviour question…. They have a full bowl of fresh water, changed daily. So why do they want to sit on the side of the bath and drink the bath water?

Anyone who figures out cat behaviour should win a Nobel Prize.
GuppytheCat · 10/07/2021 23:19

Because they have now seen through your cunning plan of supplying them with nasty tasting fresh water and have outsmarted you by stealing the water you were keeping for yourself.

Or something.

Also, cats don’t like their water to be too near their foodbowl, where they might accidentally drop their kibble/freshly slaughtered prey into it.

Because Cat. Not for us to figure out Grin Mine likes licking water off the windowsill, drinking out a plant pot and is now in cat heaven - the neighbours have installed a cat fountain. It's actually a water feature but in true cat form, he thinks they put it there just for him Blush
sashh · 11/07/2021 04:28

Is it me or does the first pic look like they are about to start a dance on Strictly?

When they get out they will probably test out puddles.

Motorina · 11/07/2021 08:56

Thankyou, everyone. Cats are clearly much more complicated than dogs.

@sashh - I'm sure you're right. I haven't put water down for my adult cat for years. He viewed it with disdain, so I stopped bothering. I do put down his weight-control kibble twice a day, which he grudgingly eats. I'm reasonably confident he's getting fed at half a dozen other houses, because he's not getting as big as a bus on weight-control kibble alone. Maybe one of them has acceptable water?

The kitten room is currently the spare bedroom. There's a babygate on the door, so they can rampage roam through the whole house, but the dogs can't raid their litter tray bother them. It has four corners: food bowls, water bowl, litter tray, and climbing tree, respectively. There are no more corners. If they want a decorative water feature, they will have to wait til they're old enough to go out. And find someone with a garden which has one, because I don't.

Watchet (the one with the thumbs) is clearly desperate to go out. I'm not sure she knows what 'out' is; it's just the lure of the forbidden. I'm having to be very careful with her and doors. She did, in fact, slip past me and get out once, but let me pick her up and bring her back in again. Whitby is basically, "I'm sure it's nice out there, but inside has dreamies..."

Whitby has decided 2am is cuddle time. She told me this by rolling on my face and purring loud enough to wake the sun. Will this get better, or is it one of those things I just have to get used to? Adult cat doesn't come upstairs - his choice, there's nothing to stop him, but he basically just moves from food bowl to sofa and back again - so I'd forgotten how noisy a 2am cat is.

I call this photo, “Dreamies, or I eat your brains…”

(Yes, they are ridiculously cute)

Mine will only drink out of a glass, preferably on the coffee table but if I have water for my self or a visitor it has to have a lid to stop her helping herself.

Because they already licked the sink tap and it's stopped giving them drips.
Motorina · 12/07/2021 09:17

@Ellmau my oldest dog - who has arthritis - spent the night ont he floor because the kittens were on her giant memory foam dog bed.

Today, I get another dog bed to go beside the bed. I'm not sure where it will fit, but...

@sashh clearly your cat is sophisticated.

@Mumdiva99 truer than you know. Every day, I have to clean the muddy cat paw prints off the bathroom sink. How they have muddy paws I have no idea - they've never been near dirt!

They are still adorable.

It’s nice your getting the other kitten it’s own bed but what about the dog?

What lovely kittensGrin You've got a hotel house full!

A tip re water. Put it somewhere away from their food. That might work. It's always worked with mine. They don't like food near their water as they see it as being tainted - or something like that. It's instinctive behaviour.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/07/2021 10:43

Our vet won’t proceed until they’re a certain weight (which I can’t remember, helpful 🙄) ours was about 6 months.

LikeAnOldFriend · 12/07/2021 11:29

Our new kittens are quite small and our vet said she would do our boy at 4 months and our girl at 5 months if they were big enough… or potentially both at 4 months but I think she thought might be a better waiting for the girl.

LikeAnOldFriend · 12/07/2021 11:29

And also they are gorgeous! X

Motorina · 18/07/2021 17:54

All booked in for 4 months - the vets confirmed at the second jab that they were happy.

Is there any point in trying to train them not to go on the dining room table, or is it an exercise in futility? They’re so cute I don’t really mind.

I don't bother with water bowls for cats, they use the dogs bowl, part of their awkward natures!Smile

@Cherrypies they are doing just that 😂🤣
